sureshot,

You'll get a lot of responses that will in affect say try both if you can.  Go to a match and explain your situation.  You may well be able to try both after the match is over.  The pards in this game like to share their toys.  I have a '66 with the 24" barrel.  I like it a lot.  It is real steady on the longer range targets.  The 20" barrel will be easier to get on targets.  It will be a little handier.  Otherwise they are the same.

I would say to try some before you buy. Most anybody at a match will let you try their rifle or pistol and let you shoot their ammo.! It's fun to reload. I bought a 24 inch Cimarron model 1873 in 45 Colt. My wife and I both shoot, and have been sharing the rifle. Now she calls it her rifle! Killed a deer with it this season! I am now looking to buy either a 66 or possibly a Henry, not one of the new Henry brand guns ,but a Cimarron Henry. The quality of the Cimarron is going to be hard to beat. I want to look at the Chaparral repros when they become available. Anyway you can have a lot of fun looking at all the options!

Sureshot,

You didn't mention your caliber of choice.....remember that rifle with a smaller diameter bore (.357) will be heavier per inch of length than those with bigger holes. Keep this in mind as you investigate.

Good luck!

Has anybody mentioned that if you get to the range during a match that there will be plenty of opportunities for you to try some before you buy them? ;D

Thank's everyone for your advice, my major concern was reliability, I owned and shot a Marlin  for years but really like the looks of the 24 inch Cimarron model 1873 in 45LC.

I've been shooting a Cimarron Henry, basically the same action, fer four years with nary a problem.
