I just received my first C&B from Cabelas ,it is 58 Remmington . Nice fit and finish. I slugged the bbl bore and got .445. The problem is when I checked the cylinder bore it miked .455.

I pushed in a .457 ball it dose not shave a ring , so it would pull forword during  shooting.

Do I need to send it back?

G'day  :)

I don't think you got a big problem there, but ya might want to run with .457 balls (Ruger Old Army size)

There is a thread at the bottom of the "Dark Arts" page called something about in-line cappers by Sundance, go through it and read it all. Really good stuff and a mod. to do to yer '58.

'Smatter of Fact, it is all good stuff ...... well worth tha reading ;)

:D
You don't gotta be insane to do this,
but it sure helps.

I'd take it out and shoot it first and if you get ball creep (sounds like a VD doesn't it?) then send it back. Actually a .002 difference should be fine. The ball is gonna get pretty swaged down upon firing but see how accurate it is with a good sandbag rest. You might be surprised. Maybe you got one of those accurized target models (shooter's model?). Try 20 grs powder then 30 grs to see if the recoil caused the balls to drift.

First of all, welcome Lowshot!

This is a good place to hang out.

Now as far as projectiles moving under recoil, there are two problems.  One is unsafe and the other simply stops the gun.  You don't want any air space between the ball and the black powder charge.  Pressures can get nuts.  That's the unsafe one.  The annoying one that stops the gun is the usual reason the problem gets fixed.  The projectiles can come out far enough that the cylinder won't rotate.  At that point you've got to hand the gun off to the RO and take the time penalty for the unfired shots.  That gets tiresome rite quick.

You can also look into getting a slightly larger round ball mold.  Say a .458.  That might solve the problem.  The pure lead bullet would swage nicely into the bore and give a good seal.

Hope this helps.

Enjoy the smoke.

Howdy and welcome pard!

As noted above, check the Dark Arts forum for answers to a lot of your questions. Most of them have been asked b'fore and the answers are saved up there. ;D

As too your "problem". Actualy it may turn out to be a major plus, depending on whether or not yer projectile backs out under recoil. Most of the replicas C&B guns have the exact opposit situation wherein the chambers are smaller than the bore instead of bigger. And one gets less than stellar accuracy that way.

Best bet is to give it a try, if it doesn't cause a problem, then take it and run with it. If it does, then contact Cables about returning it. They are a good company and will make it right one way or the other!

Again, welcome to The Den!!! Post often and have fun!

PS: Even if the answers are in the Dark Arts area, you can still put yer questions in here...it makes fer fun reading and sometimes a whole new answer will come up that hasn't been "found" b'fore!
