Mad Mucus

G'day,

I'm lookin' to get me a new powder flask for C&B from Track of the Wolf (good reputation in Oz)
http://www.trackofthewolf.com/(S(cnqk3angairjvryem1x43k2s))/categories/partList.aspx?catID=1&subID=11&styleID=32

What style/type is favored and why?

Thanks,

Mucus

I have two cylindrical flasks and one Remington flask. The cylindricals stand nicely but the Remington flask lays flat on the table so it won't roll off but it takes up more room in my shooting box. The Remington flask holds more powder than the cylindrical one. I'm not counting the Zouave flask that holds at least 1/2 pound.
A single cyl flask shooting 20-grs powder will get my two pistols through a 6 stage match. As for measuring spouts, I'd recommend the 15, 20, 25, & 30 grain spouts for revolvers. I only use the 15 & 20 grainers when shooting 36 cals otherwise its either the 20 or 30 grainers I use the most for the 44s.

What caliber C&B revolvers are you going to use.  The Colt style is the one you are most likely to encounter.

Personally, I use the colt types because that's what works for me.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

ROA .45 cal... I was thinkin' maybe the 1/3lb cylinder type and or the Colt type with spouts 20, 25, 30, 35 & 40 grainers to cover all moods and "would you like a shot" onlookers. Would it be wise to order an extra flask spring?

Nobody shoots BP C&B in my crowd, only cartridge. :-\

Ho Double M,

I've got one of the Colt flasks.  It won't get me thru Five stages.  Go with the basket weave/diamond bigger one.  I  hate refillin' a flask at a match.  And, if ya get the extra spring, remember where ya put it.  I have one, but dang if I know where it is. . .

Howdy M&M!

You asked about flasks and said:

"ROA .45 cal... I was thinkin' maybe the 1/3lb cylinder type and or the Colt type with spouts 20, 25, 30, 35 & 40 grainers to cover all moods and "would you like a shot" onlookers. Would it be wise to order an extra flask spring?

When I shoot my Colts, I use the Colt style - #1, p.1.  When I shoot my Remington I use the one on p.2 near the bottom - with dog, the Rem. issue style.  Ruger doesn't have an issue type so do what DD says or get the Walker type if quantity is important.

As to the spouts - I have 4 and have used them all - from time to time.  I've settled on about 22-23 gr fffg from a 25 gr spout for several reasons: it's nice to my guns; it's as accurate as I need for my type shooting; and it's economical.

Springs?  Naaah.  I've been using both my flasks since the early 70s - no broken spring yet. 'Course I s'pose you could lighten the spring and make a "race" flask ...  ;)

Have fun!!!

I WILL advise you to get one of the screw-in funnels - marked "FUNNEL-FL" on their p.3.  It works well; and if the threads are deep enough (and they look so) it will hold the filler "door" open while you fill it without having to tear apart the flask.

I shoot C&B a lot.  After trying various flasks, I use one like that labled PS on page two.  I have a hole drilled in my loading block that the flask sits in and it is a lot easier to fill than the old style types.  Even if you get a funnel, it is still a lot faster to unscrew the top of the PS style flask and dump in the powder.  Also makes it easier to dump out if you like to keep your powder stored in the original container between matches.

Noz

1/4 lg of powder will get you through 6 stages If you are shooting 20grs per shot with a little left over.  I wouldn't mess with a flask smaller. I like the flat style of flask because it fits my hand better than the cylinders.

What ?  am  I the only pard using  a Horn?? ;D   I use the horn that I had for years and just poured into a standard measure.  I know, it's slow but so am I :).

I use the round flask mostly.  I have a Walker type that I am trying out.  Push the end into the cylinder and it dumps out what is pre-set.  Likeing it so far as I load the cylinder out of the pistol and use the loading device that Powder INc. sells.  I can load all 5 with powder, put the new ROA boolit or rnd ball on each hole then ram them in with the device, then put into the pistol.  I even do it this way for Colt & 58 Remi's.  The tool is the best thing going for C&B.  Wish I would have come up with it. :(
I have an old Colt flat style that I never use cause it has a side-way's lever (push button is best IMHO) and 2 rnd flasks that also have the lever.  The 7 others that I have are all push button.  Thunder Ridge has the best rnd flask made by Ted Cash IMHO. Plus they have the spouts to match.  BTW- shooting C&B for 9yrs and never had a spring go south on a flask.  Had a screw come out of one and the push button, spring etc went flying during a match.  That is one reason the Ted cash type is good.  A roll pin holds it together. :)

Modoc: a horn is good!  But I've never seen one used for C&B.  I'll bet it happened "Back in the Day!"

Cactus Cris, howdy!  I'll bet that TC flask is a good one.  Cash stuff seems to be very well made.  I only prefer the old style 'cause of my NCOWS induced "authenticity" thing.  Which I enjoy immensely!  If I shot for accuracy with a Ruger ROA or other accurate adjustable sight types, I'd probably do it that way.  I'm just at the starting gate using a C&B pistol for matches.  The last 32 years of C&B shooting have been essentially plinkin'.  Which - as we all know - is great fun.  However, one of my New Year's resolutions is to FINALLY shoot a match with C&B pistol(s) as my main match gun(s).

I said: 'If I shot for accuracy with a Ruger ROA or other accurate adjustable sight types'.  Perhaps I should clarify this statement in cas any new folks trying to decide C&B yes/no!   C&B pistols are VERY accurate as is!  The gun doesn't HAVE to have adjustable sights to be accurate.  I have 3 ... and none have adj. sights.  They're all more accurate than I!  ;)

Go for it. Use the C & Bs as main match guns. I love to hear the coughing of the RO.

I carry one of those little eagle flasks meant for .31 in my cartride pouch on my belt, along with balls, caps, Wonder Wads(if used) and nipple pick. In my shooter's bag I carry the regular Remington flask to refill the small flask.
(I shoot .36cal. with about a 14-15 gr load. This for Triple 7. I have a replacement spout for the little flask to up the charge to 16-17 gr when using BP.)

Just have to find out how to fit a new spare cylinder(available locally) cost effectively to give me 10-12 shots on the firing line as I'm having difficulty locating a second matching pistola or finding the bucks.

A little late with my reply but I own four of the CVA cylinder flasks and really like them.  However, for a shoot I usually carry two in my haversack.  I do like the look of the basketweave flask that you picked up.
