Hey all, long time lurker first time poster.

Just picked up a .357/.38 NMV on Wednesday and have been doing holstering/unholstering and tons of dry fire practice.

Well, tonight, after some Gun Scrubber and Hoppe's loving in an effort to clean out whatever metal particles and whatnot that have been accumulating in the couple days of practicing, the gun has a problem.

The hammer will only go to about half cock because the cylinder latch (not entirely sure of its actual name), or whatever the part that locks the cylinder in place is called, will not unlatch/release.  However, when I open the loading gate, the latch releases and goes into the frame just fine and the cylinder turns freely.

So, basically, I can open the loading gate, turn the cylinder halfway to lock, shut the loading gate, cock the hammer and pull the trigger.  But when I try to cock the hammer afterwards, no go, latch won't release.

I'm not new to firearms but this is my first revolver of any type and I figured I'd ask here.

Thanks in advance,
Platypus

Make sure your cylinder pin is pushed in all the way.

Cylinder pin looks fine, but even when held in it's still no go, hammer won't cock at all when the cylinder latch is up.  Took her apart to see if there was anything blatantly broken or not but to my untrained eyes everything looked fine: plunger, gate spring, etc all look undamaged.

I'm stumped.  With the cylinder out and the cylinder pin in the gun cycles just fine, but toss the cylinder back in and it's lock-up city after the first cycle.

First reading your post I would agree with Rawhide, still tend to believe it's part of the problem.  Take it a part and make sure the end of the base bend gives with spring tip end push it in and out. then make sure there is no debris in the reciever.  When you put the cylinder in and push the base pin in, give the cylinder a spin to see if it free spins, before closing loading gate. Make sure a chamber lines up with barrel and firing pin.  Then close loading gate and try cocking hammer.

One of my old models is tempramental when I put the cylinder in.  It tends to hang up but some persuasion with my fingers and thumb get it spinning again, Then it's back to normal.

I am not sure how far you got into this gun for cleaning. Didn't sound like you stripped it down.  So it should be okay internally

Turned out to be a stuck hammer plunger.  Apparently the pin created a burr/lip on the hammer plunger making it stick.  Took the burr off and it's like night and day.  Cleaned up a few more burrs that I found and the gun feels better than before.

Thanks for the help.  I'll keep my eye on the cylinder pin and maybe get one of those locking ones.

Glad you found the problem.  :)
