I've heard so. I know a feller that likes the old Unique 'cause to him it smokes a little like BP so he gets a little of the appearence real gunpowder. He likes the smoke. I wonder if they still produce the old smokier Unique? I doubt there is much call for it as everybody seems to tout "clean burning" for just about every powder including subs and some BPs.

I find it a little cleaner, but not nearly as clean as Universal Clays.

   Greetings!

I just have to say that I've been using Hercules, and now Alliant, Unique for everything from .32 C.F. Long in my Marlin 1891, all the way up to light loads in .45-70 Gvt.
Dirty?! BP IS DIRTY!!! I don't recall ever having a problem with grains of Unique under the crane of any of my New Service Colts. A few flakes of powder residue in the barrel? In the chamber? Don't worry about it! Unique is a VERY versatile powder that has worked wonderfully for me with a minimum of load development; it's the powder of choice in my Colt SAA & New Service .38WCF, and .45 Colt. It's also good for light, cast lead loads in rifles.
Well! I feel so much better, now that I'm "out"!

I haven't noticed that it's all that much cleaner, but less smoke, which I miss. I may have to go to the Holy Black now, 'cause I do like smoke.

I got a 8 pounder of the old stuff gave to me a couple years ago so it may be a while before I try it, because I don't use it much.  But I think I will now for a while. ;D  Myself clean burning has never been a priority to me with Nitro powders, my three favorite loads with Nitro are all filthy, more filthy than anything I have ever seen with Unique.  But they do the job I want them to do fine. ;)

I read an article testing the new unique soon after the new formula came out.  It noted that the new powder was quite a bit clean in shotgun loads and somewhat cleaner in pistols.  And you probably need to load towards the maximum recommended loads to get the best burn.

Unique is still a great powder with a wide range of use.

Just use a tight crimp and it will burn clean. I have been a unique user for years and like the new formula better than the old.
