I have a modle 3 S&W .38 DA revolver. The Single action notch on the hammer is worn so the hammer doesn't stay cocked. It works fine in bouble action. Can this be fixed or should I look for a replacement hammer?

I'm making the assumption that this is a 'real' Smith & Wesson.

The original hammer notches can be welded, re-cut and hardened by a competent 'smith.

There's a good possibility that you can re-cut the existing hammer notch and mate the surfaces, if you're careful.

If you're not - then it's really best to pay someone to do it.

Incidentally - the S&W Model 3 happens to be a single-action - so what model do you really have - the .38 Double Action Third Model?

If so - there are replacement parts available, if you really look.

Yes, it's a real S&W DA type 3.
Thanks for the help.

Chances are that the notch is merely worn.

If so -  'you' can use a Swiss Needle file and re-cut it.

If it's broken - it can be re-welded as I'd mentioned.

That Model is pretty common - try Gunpartsco for a replacement.

Good Luck.
