On early firearms "Rust Blue" or "Nickle" on the Later ones "Nitre Blue or Black" or "Nickle".

Could you be more specific with reference to the time period for the blue finishes when they went from Rust to Nitre Blue?

As I recollect, it was during the late teen's/early 20's.

Rust blue takes more time and I suspect the Nitre/heat blue process was faster.  One thing I find funny to watch as others have pointed out, is Michael Caine firing a Webley Mark VI in the 1870s setting in "Zulu", amost 50 years before it was made.  Still it looks decidily British Empire and fills the bill well.
