I've been putting together a set of CAS guns in caliber 38-40.  I've got a 5.5 inch revolver now.  I've already decided the mate for it will be one of them nice, genuine SASS Colts.
Who makes a good rifle in this caliber?  My first choice would be a model '73.  I would also consider a short barrel model '66.  I might even consider a Lightning model if I could find one in 38-40.   ???

I've had a Cimarron copy of the M1873 in that caliber for several years and am pleased with its accuracy and operation.  However, the best rifle action that I've had in this chambering was an original M1892 Winchester; very very slick action.  Have not priced one lately, but you used to be able to pick one up relatively inexpensively as it was not as attractive to collectors as the .44WCF was.  Might take a while but you could find a decent one too if you shop around a bit.

I'll be corrected if wrong 1895 Marlin, this is the one that comes to me first.

My wife uses an original 1889 Marlin in 38-40, really slick, nice looks, very accurate.  You can usually find a pretty cherry one for less than $1000.

lR, That would be an 1894 Marlin. The 1895's are big bore large frame guns.  I shoot an 1889 Marlin in 38-40, real nice caliber to shoot............Buck 8) ;)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

I think the .38-40 is an excellent choice of caliber.  I shoot an 1889 Marlin part of the time, using APP or black powder loads. I formerly owned and shot 1892's in this caliber also, one had a 24"bbl. and the other was an 18" bbl. carbine.  A shooting pard has two '66's--one is a carbine and the other a short rifle and he loves 'em both.  He also shoots an old '73 in this caliber and likes it very well.  You might have to hunt for a while to find a '66 in .38WCF, but I think it would be worth the trouble. I am leaning toward a '73 Short Rifle in this caliber for my next rifle.

I have an 1889 Marlin with a tang sight in 38-40 - don't shoot it much as it's over 100 years old.  I have an EMF (Uberti) in 38-40 that shoots extremely well - best thing is you can shoot it in Classic Cowboy plus 38-40 is a great BP round as well.
