I don't even know what it/one is. Am I missing out on something good?

Foam tubes used in construction.  You buy them in a diameter close to your case id and slice them off to make filler wads.
Nope, I don't use filler in my .44s and punch out Coke fridge pack boxes for over powder.

Marshal ..i got the idea off a SASS link last year but just got around to trying it , the stuff comes in 3/8 or 1/2 so it works in 38 /357 and 45 LC cases ..nice tight fit no air space .. no grits or meals needed ..it compresses nice too ...Gonna get out tomorrow and do somemore testing with the 50 rounds i loaded with it . if the weather holds out for me .

Thanks for the explanations. I guess it could be quite a nice thing to use when doing CAS BP loads.  ;)

Well i had a sunny day today and went out and tested my backer rod loads ... had `em loaded up with cheapo oregon trail 200 gr moly lubed bullets and  20 grs of 777 3f topped off with the backer rod ,with 1/8 inch compression ....I shot 50 times all shots felt and sounded the same , still a pretty stout load with plenty of smoke , was shooting at a papper target at 15 yards free hand , all the shots grouped well 1 inch groups untill i got tired ....lol when the groups opened up i knew it was me not the bullets . Took a little break and the groups tightened up again . I have been useing card board punch outs to fill the air space , but thats a lot of punching , the backer rod is much easyer , and seemed more constant than the card board filler.I`m pretty sure it was the Capt. Baylors Ranger Camp site where i got the info on it last year ..theres good instructions on loading with it on the site . i had a little trouble reminding myself to get the backer rod when i was in Home Depot . The stuff comes in 20 ft lenghts for about 3 bucks , and cuts easy will sissors , doesn`t take but a min to cut up a hundred or so . I`d say if your useing something else for a filler , give it a try its easy loading .

I have been using 3/8" backer rod in 38 cases loaded with APP for over a year now and the results have been most satisfactory.
