Nipple deformation.

I have had a lot of trouble with my 58s keeping the caps on. I have finally isolated the problem to nipple deformation. The nose of the nipple becomes mushroom shaped and spreads the cap so much that it has no grip on the base of the nipple. As a result the caps loosen and/or fall off.
I under stand that no nipple will last forever but I put a new set of TRESCOs on, fired 18 rounds and one nipple is already mushroomed. A friend shoots Remingtons and has to change nipples ever 2 years or so.
The main spring pressure screw is turned all the way out.
No I didn't dry fire it.
This is happening on both guns.
Any thoughts?
I see the solution as being a hammer modification. Has any one tried this?

You could shorten the hammer face but I'd rather ruin a few nipples by grinding them down first (you can always shim them up if you get them too short). Also the Tresos are a little longer than other nipples and may need grinding back some. That could change which cap they prefer. I've also installed a Colt '51/60 mainspring in a Remington to make the hammer fall just right.

Which brand Remmies are ya talking NozzleRag ? ..and are ya talking the factory nipples ?  I`ve got one of each brand remmie being still made today and one ASM out of business . I`ve had really good luck with the Pietta factory nipples and they are the cheapest ... i`ve put the Pietta nipples on every brand except the Uberti because they have a different thread size  ..and i ordered a set from Thunder Ridge for that gun because of the factory Uberti nipples being an odd cone size and i had trouble getting caps to stay put . ( that fixed the problem ) I`ve hammered on my Pietta thousands of rounds and am still useing the nipples that came on it ...it`s always been my favorite pistol because of its larger frame size . I`ve shot it at least once a week for the past 3 years ( same nipples ) and they still look good . The nipples i bought from ThunderRidge are bronze and they work well but ...i don`t shoot the gun very often so i`m not sure about how long they will hold up .

Piettas.
If I take the factory nipples down far enough to get most of the "mushroom" off they should be about the right length. Right?

I 've got TRESCOs on them now.

The factory Pietta remmie nipples work just right with the remington #10 caps ..when i first bought my Pietta i have left the hammer full cocked while in the gun safe ..so the hammer spring doesn`t have the power it had when new ..just a little premature ageing . I know there are other ways to weaken it ..but i didn`t really want to remove any material.  I suppose thats what happen to your nipples that is one strong hammer spring on the Pietta remmie . But i`m still useing a factory set on my Pietta with thousands of rounds through it .

So far I've run Rem 10s, Rem 11s, CCI 10s, CCI11s and RWS 175s. I've run these on factories, Thunder Ridge and TRESCO nipples. All come off. I'm going to have a shortening party tonight.
Get ut the Dremel and get after them.

Yep a shortening party may be inorder ...good night for it .. let the misses answer the door to all the trick or treaters ..  I sure thought the factory Pietta nipples were the cats meow .. i`ve never had a problem with them useing the #10 remington caps  ... it was the Uberti nipples that gave me a fit . At least ya can buy the Piettas at cabelas in a set cheap . I can`t say that for the Uberti`s .

I took the original Pietta nipples that were beaten up badly and shortened them by .045" by sticking the nose of the nipple thru a strip of mild steel that looked to be the right thickness and cutting them off with a file. Worked pretty slick. All nipples fire after that much shortening and I can not see any evidence of beating yet.
