Hi,

I have just been told that my Codymatic .45will not be able to be used in NCOWS 'cause of the short stroke kit and aluminum carrier ... okay.

So I was kind of thinking about a .45 cal Cowboy Marlin ... my only question is whether it can be made to not only shoot but use a tube of .45 Schofield?

Thanks in advance for your answers ...

Most Marlins will shoot Schofields out of the box.  Others may need some tuning.  So, yes they can be made to shoot well and shoot Schofields.

Pettifogger,

So the next step is to carry my ten Schofield 'Cap' rounds into a dealer and see if the will load from the tube and eject?

And if it does, I should be okay?

Pettifogger,

Agreed ... all my 'caps are kind of hom made with bullets installed but no powder or primers  ... and where the primers should be is a coat of latex caulking ... I would not mind if the salesman jacked them through the gun ...as long as they were loaded and ejected okay I would be happy ... do you think I could have it done for me?

I cn see how the salesman would get nervous if he handed a gun to me and I began to load it ... but if I showed him the caulked over hole for the primer, do you think he would do it?

I ain't Pettifogger, and I stayed in an even cheaper hotel last weekend :D but most Marlins will run Schofield cases out of the box.
Whether your dealer will let you try with your "caps" is ............. well, if you don't ask ..........
I'd try before I bought :)

Mine, circa 1996, cycled them like #$%^ through a goose. If you're looking at new ones, especially with REM or REP markings, all bets are off. Better find a used JM stamped one. the Rem made ones may not even cycle the 45 Colts! :o ::)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

WWE, old pard;

Why doncha TRY 'em before going to the dealer?  You can't hurt it!  If it doesn't work, take it apart as if to clean it, clear out the jam and THEN try to find a 'smith.

The 45 S&W (or 45 Schofield) round has a much bigger diameter rim.  But many of the Marlins will work anyway if the rim fits on the bolt face.

Help me out here!

The Marlin 1895 Cowboy is chambered in .45/70,, right?

It's going to feed, chamber and shoot Schofield .45??

Is my thinki piece playing tricks on me?

Blackfoot ::)

The 1895Cowboy IS 45-70.

I 'think' they mean the 1894 Marlin,,which is a fine rifle...or at least they were before Remingtion.

Yep, Jeff,,,Marlin is Remington owned now. After the buy-out,,,or so I've heard,,there was/are some really hedeious QC problems. It may have seen it's worse...........Remington was suppose to really focus on the slips.....but beware the new Marlins. I'd want to at least LOOK at one if I was buying now.

WaddWatsonEllis

Marshall,

Thanks for the tips ... and I have about ten home made snap caps for the Schofield cartridge ... so I will bring then along and try them out fefore buying ... I was told that a .45 (Colt) lever action Marlin should fire Schofield even more easily than my '73 does ... but now i will check them ...

But in the meantime I bought a Pedersoli Reminton style rolling block in .45-70  ... and until I get the new sights dialed in, I am afraid that any mad money that would normally buy a Marlin is gonna be spent on the Pederesoli ....

Remington,Marlin,H&R,and a couple others or more are owned by Cerberus Capitol Management,a foreign investment group. Not good.

And isn't the Cerberus Group a front company for that Billionaire a$$hole who hates guns and give lot$ of ca$h to the Obama campaign?  (the 1st time and now re-election camp)

I hadn't heard about the various buy-outs, but I think that's the name I heard from an NRA - LaPierre posting.

Definitely not good if this is the same.  We need a Bill Gates-type on OUR side.

VERY scary!

Don't believe everything you read on the Internet.  The actually NRA disputes that rumor:

http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Read.aspx?ID=7136

The CEO of Cerberus is an avid hunter, the chairman served as Secretary of the Treasury under G. W. Bush, the head of global investments is a former Republican US Vice-President, the CFO and COO are large Republican contributors, etc.  Cerberus is a Limited Partnership, the management team are the partners and thus the owners of the company.   George Soros is not listed amongst them.

However, since all these rumors are based on a germ of truth, I did look into where this rumor might have originated.  The best I can figure is that George Soros' hedge fund and Cerberus are competitors.  On at least one occasion I have seen an article which used a phrase like "George Soros and Cerberus" where the intent was to indicate that both companies were interested in the same opportunity and not that they were linked.  But, I suppose, if you didn't bother to read the article and were only looking for sound bites, one might draw the wrong conclusion.

Thanks for the clarification.  I didn't just look for sound-bytes (bites) but I may in fact, have simply stated mistakenly.  I just read something about this yesterday in my new American Rifleman, but I admit to diminished recall and will re-read and correct my statement, if needed.  Hell, I couldn't even remember Soros' name, which is why I wrote the apt description for him.

5 min. later ...

I re-read the piece by Mr. LaPierre, and found my memory totally at fault.  I've erased my post entirely.  Please erase what you quoted of me, Frisco - it is NEVER my intention to spread false rumors.  My apologies.  My sentiment is OK, but not my reference.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you had looked for sound bites.  I was targeting my comment at the person(s) who published the rumor and spread it.  The NRA published the rebuttal as a result of the spread of the false rumor.  All you did was fall prey to the rumor, something we all do on occasion.

BTW, the only reason I am versed on this particular one is that I have a friend who has a penchant for believing and forwarding these sorts of things to me and I, for some strange reason, feel compelled to research and  shoot down every false one he sends my way.

I appreciate correct info.  In fact, I think it was in a conversation that I heard what I commented on, not on the Algore line.

No problems, pard!
