The cartridge spring keeper in my .45 Taylors Spencer broke. Where can I get parts?  Thanks a bunch.

Thanks guys. I had been in email contact with them, but the week long delays in answering had gotten kind of old. Oh well, $1200 for the weapon, what's a long distance call or two?

There is only about three in the front office, Tammy , Sue , and maybe one other...
I've been in there when the phone is ringing off the hook , for orders , questions, etc....
Still the girls made me feel welcome, when I dropped in.....

I'm sure they get twice as many emails as phone calls , they do get to them , but it does take.
That's why I said call Tammy or Sue , they will be very helpful...

Since I have 45 Sch. too... how did it break ?

Bluesuit,

If you go to page 14 of this thread and look at the topic "How Have You Altered Or Modified Your Spencer" you will find a list of spare parts that I originally ordered, just to have on hand in case they were needed.  So far I haven't needed any and I have put several thousand rounds through my 56-50.  Good luck has smiled on me so far.

You may want to get some of these parts for your "parts bin" also.

Thanks some more. I am planning on getting more than one spring. I figured if this one went, the next one will too. Plus I'll get all of the screws and stuff which are normally removed for cleaning. Just a matter of time before one is lost.

I was on the field at Richmond, KY ready to blaze away when I started getting double feeds and stovepipe jams. Spencers don't make good single shots, especially when more than one round tries to leave the magazine. I got it home and started searching through it and found the spring broke a little below the bend in the leaf.

I received my springs last week. Now a question. How does it go in? This is the cartridge spring keeper in the hole under the cartridge keeper lever. Mine was broken and fell out in two pieces before I saw how it should be in place. Thanks a bunch.

Bluesuit,

If you go to page 7 of this forum there is listed a schematic and parts list for the Spencer.  You can print both of them out for reference.

I believe that you have to drive out the cross pin, install the new spring, re-install the follower and the cartridge keeper and then put the cross pin back in.

The only diagram I have seen is of the .56-50. It has a coil spring. The .45 has a leaf spring.

Hell-Er High Water

Bluesuit,

I have a copy of a parts breakdown for a rifle with a cartridge keeper with a leaf spring.  I can just barely read it, but it shows the leaf spring with the short leg on the bottom.  There is no mention if this spring fits in a slot, hole or other retainer in the action.  It also shows a screw going in from the left side of the action that must be removed to install the new spring and the keeper.

This is all the additional info that I have.  I hope that it helps.

I can only speak to the original--Hell-Er is correct that they slide elbow first into the rectangular hole with the longer leg up.  The longer leg should stick up in the little slot on top of the receiver.  The little short "shelf" on the cartridge guide engages the end of the long leg of the spring--then you press the cartridge guide down until the hole in the guide lines up with the hole in the receiver.  On the original, the "crosspin" is actually a screw, so you either screw it back in or, if it's just a pin, then drive it back in.

Just a note of clarification here.

I checked my 56-50 carbine, and the parts schematic, and there is a retainer screw rather than a cross pin that I mentioned in an earlier post.

From what info I have it looks like all models have the retaining screw wheather they have the coil spring or the leaf spring for the cartridge keeper.
