I am building a Gemmer style trapdoor Hawken using a 1873  receiver and breech with a Greenmountain  45/70 barrel.  I need to know what cartridges are ok to use in this rig.
Goex makes a black powder subsitute cartridge in 45/70. I believe it is called a pinnacle.  Is this all right to use?
I will probably be loading my own stuff later on, but at the moment I'm not.
Thanks for any information you can give me.

Pinnacle is pretty "low energy" so ya ought to be just fine with it.  Sure ain't gonna hurt yer iron.

Hello triggersmith,

You might want to check out Republic Metallic as well. They offer a 45-70 cartridge with 405 grain roundnose that is dead nuts on to the original trapdoor load. They offer it in standard grade using Schuetzen black powder or match grade loaded with Swiss.

Ho Triggersmith,

I've been shootin', with great satisfaction, reduced loads in my 45-70 roller with any cheep bp (LIDU) and the PRS 45 Cal 250 grain pistol bullet.  I  don't lube/size 'em.  I use 'em as dropped from the mold and pan lube 'em.  They "bump" up to .458 rite nice with enuf thump underneath from the cheep bp.  I am puttin' a 1/16" Circle Fly fiber wad under 'em.

I've shot some 50 yard one hole groups with it when graphin' a test batch.  They averaged 1322 fps with a SD of 21.  I'll shoot 'em some more and report back.  Looks like a great plainsman load.  Also,  it'd take Bambi rite quick.
