As my 56-50 Rifle is due to arrive here on Saturday, been transported  by a couple of CAS-girl-friends who are about to particpate in a dog exebition in my home-town.  I have prepared for the arrival by loading my brass with prime, powder and ball. Well I know it is a chance to take, it would perhaps been better to wait for the rifle to try cycling the rounds?  I have done all that some of you have described on list. The OAL is 1,62". The round is seated firmly against 41grns of Swiss FFg. The roll crimp is there but not heavy. The round will not move if I try to turn it, so my humble experience tells me it should be suficient.
I will not alter anything before I have a chance to cycle a few rounds in my new Spencer...!
Come Saturday the 14th, there is a club match (Texas Longhorn, Norway) I wil lbe there having fun with my new Spencer.

Chould the roll crimp be any heavyer or is it suficient when the lead sticks good in the brass?

I am spliting my rounds with my good friend Capt Redneck, the Norwegian distributor of Armi Sport and Palmetto historical firearms and fellow SSS member. Yaàll see he has gotten a new Spencer 56-50 Rifle to. He alreaddy has a 44-40 Carbine that I was fortunate to be able to try out at our last match.

Howdy,

As long as the crimp holds tight against the FFG, and the bullet wont turn, you should be OK.  A good crimp, however, is needed for consistant ignition.  I shaved some off the bottom of my crimp die to allow a slightly tighter crimp.  Improved ignition.

I have found cartridge feeding to be a bit better in both .44 Russian and .56-.50 when there's a good crimp.  Sometimes when there's not quite enough crimp the case mouth will catch on entry into the chamber.  Spencers, like most lever actions, like smooooth cartridges!

I also noted in my .56-50 Spencer, with the Starline cases, that I could not get a good crimp until I annealed the case mouths.

i stay away from a serious if any crimp. i've found the cases tend to spit at the lip after a few shots. annealing (sp.?) doesn't work for me. good luck, geo.

Well, guess I did it right the first time. The rounds that I prepared without having the rifle to try them in works as a dream.
I did a runtrough with a few cartridges yesterday and again this morning......works like a dream.
I will not be able to fire my new rifle before next saturday at a club match......that is going to be fun....IHAAAAW
