I got a pair if the Hickok holsters (cheap) from Cabela's to fill an immediate need... so I can shoot my new brace 1858's.

What to put on those things to keep 'em from bleedin' all over my britches?  ???

You could try a light coat or two of Tan-Kote or Bag-Kote.  I put one or the other on all my holsters and have had no problem with them bleeding.

Just a thought.

Trailrider

Howdy, Pard,

Does the leather feel oily to the touch?  Or is it just the dye coming off?  If the leather feels oily, then you will need to try to soak up as much of the oil as possible.  Use paper towels to try to blot off as much oil as possible.  It may be that the oil will keep leaching out of the leather regardless.  If you can get as much of the oil blotted up as possible, then try applying several coats of BagKote(R) or TanKote(R) from Fiebing's.  Tandy or Leather Factory (same outfit) has it, or you may be able to pick it up from your local shoe repair store.  I'd wear vinyl gloves when handling this as well as eye protection.  It isn't particularly nasty stuff...no odor or noxious fumes, but it tends to do the same things to your skin that it will to the leather! :)  Same for your eyeballs, so just to be on the safe side.  If the "Kotes" don't work, try some of the other stuff.  If all else fails...bite the bullet and buy some leather gear that is vegetable-tanned, NON-oiled.

Hope this helps...

You may be able to clean some of the oil out with leather cleaner (stripper) from the shoe store, the stuff used prior to changing the color of shoes. It will dry the leather somewhat, but that will help the holster to retain its shape. It'll also change the color and possibly take out some of the dye that is in them. Remember that the oils will migrate evenly through the leather. If you clean the surface, by the next day the oils from deeper in the leather will come to the surface. Not knowing what the leather is, this may or may not be effective, but I'd start there. Alternatively, you may want to try using alcohol if that's handy (the stuff from the drug store, not yer drinkin' likker).

Thaks for the replys.  I reckon I'll try what the Lady already has at home first.   ::)

And... yes... if I decide to shoot the Remingtons fairly reg'lar I'm going to get some quality leather.
