Ask questions!  Be safe and check any advice with reloading manuals.
Life is easy with the internet.  Read the manual for your revolver (page 11).
http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/PDF/InstructionManuals/12.pdf will tell you that standard ammo, including chamberings in magnums and "high velocity" 44-40 are safe in their respectively chambered old style Ruger revolvers.
Bullet manufacturers list recommended velocities for hunting bullets and usually intended game for each in their reloading manuals or on their websites.

The reloading manuals list starting loads for pistol so that you don't get a bullet stuck in the bore.
Pick some candidate bullets, check the manuals for your intended velocites to choose a powder.  Reload per the data provided by the powder or bullet manufacturer (who has tested it so you dont' stick a bullet or blow up a gun).  See what shoots well and fits your need.
Ask questions if you still have them and ignore nitpickers and those who guffaw and ridicule you.  They don't want to help or hear an explanation, just show their imagined superiority through useless redirection.
