Oh *&^%..........
« on: August 24, 2006, 02:36:18 AM »
......I screwed up big time!  :-[

A couple of weeks ago I shot in a muzzleloading match and had to go to work almost immediately afterwards. I had time to clean my rifle but not enuff time to clean my 58 Remmy. (I won first place in Precision Pistol and second in Hunting Pistol BTW  8) ) So I gave it a good soaking with Ballistol and hung it on a peg over the bench, planning to clean it as soon as I got home from work.

Things happened, I got distracted by various stuff, and didn't even enter my shop again until tonight ...and there it was! :o

JEEZE LOUISE!!!!!!! A ruined gun! :( .....NOT!!!! In fact there's not a mark on it, no rust, nadda, nothing, zip, swabbo! ;D I gave it a good rinsing in the utility sink, wiped it down, patched the bore and chambers, looked at it under the shop light, and I can't can't find a speck of rust anywhere! And here's the wierd part: My shop is in the basement...IN IOWA....the only place more humid might be Louisiana fer cryin out loud! I have to keep my guns in a humidity controled area when I'm not using them and check them on a regular schedual! So this was a happy surprize!

Oh! One more thing: The crud? It came out as easily as if I had just finished a match b'fore cleaning it! ;D ;D ;D

My eternal gratitude to the Gun Gods and the creators of Ballistol! They were watching over an idiot! ;) :D

That's great news Cuts.

Many moons and a long time ago our gummerment chose Ballistol for our military needs.  Worked great, then we went to war with the country that produced it.  Then, it was gone for a long time.  Now, it's back and still works great.  I've been a cheerleader for Ballistol ever since I tried it.  I don't sell the stuff, but wish I did.

For precise spot luberication and protection tho, you can't beat the Marshall's own Gun Butter.  A mite spendy for an overall wipedown or spray application, but I've found nothing better for exact spot luberication.

Then, there's a newcomer from Boeing Aircraft.  I'm still evaluating Boeshield.  It shows promise, especially for corrosion protection and bi-metal reaction prevention.  But, that's another story.

Anyway, your experience with Ballistol is timely cuz I'm shootn' "Fire in the Hills" this weekend and it could be a mite wet. . .  I'll keep my Ballestol at the ready.

Yep .. better keep it quiet ! I`ve been a WD40 cheerleader and guns for as long as i can remember ... but HUMM ..you have me scratchin me chin and thinking .. it`s humid enough here in MS. to cut it with a knive . anything left in my shop over night is uasually ruined the next day . Unless it`s soaked in WD40 / some of the pards in my local club have been sold on the ballistol for years .. I`ve been the last hold out .. but maybe i`ll just have to give it a try . Anyone ever use it as a patch and ball lube .. some of the pards here do .

My story reads differently. I shot my 1858s at a shoot on a Saturday with Pyrodex RS loads and didn't have time to clean them. Sprayed with WD 40 and set them aside. Got them out on Monday to clean them and the face of the cylinders are slightly pitted.
I need Balistol. Where is it sold?

You need more than Balistol, Pyrodex residue is so hydroscopic it ain't even funny.   I will only from now on use 2 powders in any of my guns.  Real Black or Nitro powders.  I know what they are and what they do. ;)

NozzelRag, as Del said, your problem was shooting Pyrodex, not your lubricant.  I'm in Iowa too, and confess that I'm pretty lazy about gun cleaning.  I only use real BP and occasionally APP, but I never hurry to clean my guns.  My rifle and shotgun have still not been cleaned since the last CVR match almost 3 weeks ago.   I fired some test shots out of a new 1858 Euroarms about 6 weeks ago and still haven't cleaned it or sprayed it with any kind of oil or lube.  It shows no sign of rust.  BP is not the problem, it's always some other factor, I'll guarantee you.

Nah! I can't brag on that one. It's the gun, not me!  :-\ That particular 58 is absolutely supurb when it comes to accuracy! It's got all the whistles and bells in the action job and the sites are perfectly regulated for round balls and 28 grains of 3f! The trigger is smoother than goose grease and the action is so slick that it almosts cocks itself! All I have to do is hold on to the thing and let it do it's stuff! 8)

44caliberkid,

That pistol came from Vaugh Truman at The Bullet Hole . Donno if he always gets them this good, but I ain't gonna complain! ;)

My first good handgun was a Remmy, was all I had, even kept it loaded in the dresser drawer.  Used to use it all weekend, just wiping enough to keep it working, never had any trouble with it.  Then Pyrodex got back on line, all the gun rag writers bragged it up so I bought a can.  Was a bit tdamp the first and only weekend I used it for bumming around the farm, got home late and didn't get to it till monday after work.

If anyone stops by the store sometime I carry it around at work, I'll be glad to show you the craters. >:(  The rest of the can got used for..........................   ;D  It's ok, my statutes of limitation is up, makes good M-80's in CO2 catridges. ;D  (Kids don't try this at home, they throw shapnel.) ::)

do you mean "Gunfire in the Hills" at Logan, IA with NTR on Sunday?
