What are good distances at which to practice for a novice CAS shooter?

I am assuming you are referring to SASS. The following is from the SASS Handbook.

QuoteThere are no absolute rules, but we suggest the following distances, by firearm, if using a target approximately 16" X 16":
Revolver – 7 to 10 yards
Shotgun – 8 to 16 yards
Rifle – 13 to 50 yards

A good practice drill:  staple a playing card to a backboard at shoulder level, back up 3 paces, draw and fire.  If you hit the card, back up another pace and fire agan.  Keep backing up after every hit till you miss the card.  Go forward a pace and start again.  If you shoot gunfighter, use two cards, as far apart as your shoulders are wide.
