Two Flints

Hello SSS,

Came across the following Spencer listed on the J.C. Devine Auction web site - located at this link: http://www.jcdevine.com/auction_2701/rifle_2.htm - that took place last year in Bedford, New Hampshire.  The Spencer was part of the personal gun collection owned by one of my favorite Country & Western stars, Johnny Cash.

Serial# 17261, .50 rimfire caliber. 20" barrel, the six-groove bore has strong rifling and scattered corrosion. The gun is fitted with a Stabler cut-off. Most of the metal has a dark patina with a few patches of fine pitting, most of the factory lettering is clear, the rear sight leaf is bent. The stocks retains most of an old refinish, have not been overly sanded and show a trace of two inspector's cartouches. They show relatively few handling marks and have the scratches initials "J" on the forend and "W" on the butt stock. A framed and signed certification by Johnny Cash dated "1988" on his personal letterhead identifies this Spencer carbine by serial number as "part of my personal collection.

Deadeye,

Don't know the exact selling price, but its pre-auction value was estimated at between $2,500.00-$3,500.00.

I am trying to find out the actual selling price.  If you click on the link for J.C. Devine Auctions, you will be taken to page two of the auction listing, on page one is another Spencer, just scroll down to the bottom of page one for a look see with description.

As a side note, Johnny Cash had an interesting gun collection. A few years back there was a Colt Paterson auctioned that he owned & it was sweet.

I understand that because of his felony conviction he gave away some guns, including Colt SAA's, to friends and family. I didn't know he was such a historical gun collector, good guy :).

Well whoever bought that Spencer is lucky.  It is like money in the bank with perpetual interest.
