Every one knows that line from Mary Poppins about the spoonful of sugar helping the medice go down but here's one better.

Although most cocktails in America had their start during Prohibition to cover the bad tasting booze, there is one cocktail that is said to have an interesting history.  This may or may not be a legand, but if it is true, it is a good one.

British soldiers in the tropics were given quinnine to prevent malaria, the bark of a South American tree, it is very bitter.  Also we know that the were issued citrus fruit or juice to prevent scurvey, the favored one being lime.  Well the story goes, "You mix your quinnine with water to make a tonic, add some London Gin and your lime and you have a Gin and Tonic water.

Proving that even if "a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down," a jigger of gin makes it even better.
