Gents:

I am looking for easy to purchase, Cast, soft lead 250 grain bullets in batches of 500 for my .45 Colt. While I like the Big-Lube bullets and can shoot at least a 100 without any binding in my Rodeo SAA, they will not allow me to load 35 grains 3fg BP (because of length) so I can load up some powerful full-house BP Field loads. As some of you know, I don't currently shoot CAS but use my SAA as my full time outdoor gun.

I have seen the Lyman #454190 bullet, and tried 2 cylinders (10 rounds) of some of a buddies Republic Metallic Cartridge Co. .45 colt 250gr. BP rounds and really liked them. I would like to reproduce this load as it shot to just a tad above POA at 50 feet.

I am not however, married to the lyman bullet. I have had an offer from a very kind gentleman who casts and posts on this board, and has been more than a gentleman with assisting me with the switch from Smokeless to BP. For him to set-up to produce the lymans would be a strain on him, I think, and I do not want to intrude on his kindness or Leather Bussiness, as I am most impressed with him and his incredible kindness to me and am selfishly wanting him to do some leather work for me (A pouch for my mult-tool, and a nice sheath that will fit my K-Bar and look correct with my El Paso Rig.).

Are their any bullets I should look at? I only shoot them out of a 4 3/4 inch SAA and only load with BP now. I do not cast and am not thinking about doing casting at this time as I am just figuring out this whole BP thing. I am sorry to ask so many questions of those who know the SAA and BP so well.

Respectfully,

Howdy Familydoc,

I  routinely load 35 or more grains of FFFg bp under the PRS bullet.  It's compressed some but still very loadable on my LEE Pro 1000 press without any bobbles.

Mason Stillwell and Springfield Slim both sell 'em.

I  sell the molds.

DD:

I had tried to compress my black Powder and got the bullets bumped up so they would not chamber...What is the secret to compressing the powder without deforming the bullet?

I'm sure this is not rocket science, but loading a good BP load is a bit harder than just doing a few grains of Unique and capping with a bullet.

I also found that with smokeless I was getting some erratic points of impact. When I tried out the Black I had a good strong load, no fear of double charging, and my weapon shoot to POA. I also like the ease of clean up; soap, water, water displacing oil. Soap and water are really cheap and available anywhere.

Thanks

Cabela's sells a compresion die and spare compression stems to compress your black powder loads without using a bullet to do so.  I find them to be very good and it might add one more step to your reloading, it's well worth it as it saves the aggrevation of accidently bumping up your bullets.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.
