Hey pards --

I got an old Winchester 1907 coming.  CAl: 351WSL ---

Even my OLD loading books have no data - Any help ??

Mike

Major 2

It was a early autoloading cartridge but did not do real well as Military round
180 gr. bullet at 1850 fps.

The 30/06 was the round the military of choise, but the 351WSL did see some duty in WW1

Winchester chambered the round around 1907 and it sort a caught on, The Police used it in the Roaring Twentys.

You could still find them on shelves in the 70's

Stars & Stripes Ammunition  http://starsandstripesammo.com  carries it now.
when planets align...do the deal !

The bullet is 0.351, I may have some data at home.  The French bought some, I understand it was used some when observation pilots met those from the other side, back before they started puttin' machine guns on planes.

The late Frank Barnes' Cartridges of the World list three loads which I would double check with another source.  I haven't used them, can't be responsible if they are wrong, etc.
177 grain cast lead  16 grains IMR 4227 @1550 fps

180 grain jacketed  19 grains 2400 @ 1793 fps

180 grain jacketed  19.5 grains IMR 4227 @1751fps

He shows a factory load to be 180 grain jacketed at 1850 fps.  He confirms what Delmonico said about the French using them.  WWI and WWII.  The rifle was also issued to prison guards and I've seen photos of chain-gang guards carrying them.

Bandit --

Those loads are pretty much what I've found around the range. I'll start low.

Thanks for the help.

Delmonico

Thats all I could find so far also, just start low and when the action ejects and reloads, just stop.

I knew I had some more, Lymnan Cast Bullet Handbook shows a 171 cast with 12.0-12.5 gr Unique, 17.0-19.0 gr 2400 and 17.0-19.5 on 4227.  So Barnes is in the ball park.

Everyone should have a copy of Cartridges of the World and Pet Loads.  Problem is you do have to check them.  Some of the loads are a little hot, some are anemic.
You gave good advice on working up loads for an old autoloader Delmonico.  No point in beating up the old gun nor trying to get lots of speed.  That cartridge and rifle combo is designed for short to medium ranges anyway.  I have a suspicion the designers had disabling people at short range in mind more than game.  A little more range and accuracy than shotguns of the day but still usable where a full high powered rifle is undesirable.

An early proto-type of the assault rifle, they offered 20 round mags.  The 30 Carbine was developed off of the 32 WSL.

Remintion also offered 20 round mags for their 8/81, Frank Hammer was said to have used one when he ambushed Bonnie and Clyde.

Del --

I figurred that Bonnie & Clyde felt a few of them !!  Load up 'till the action works -- That's what I did for my old Broomhandle C-96.  Good way to do it for an old gun because the springs may be a little weak.

Thanks again -- Mike

Delmonico

No problem, one reason I keep them books around. ;)
