Any tips on cleaning rawhide? I was just given a really nice roping saddle from a friend long out of horses. The mildew cleaned off nicely. I just needed toothpicks to dig into the tooling to clean. The pommel is all covered in rawhide as well as the cantle, but they are quite stained. Would a dillluted bleach mixture work or bathroom cleaners followed by something to put some moisture back in? Just thoughts.
Also, what is the best way to clean suede? I know from experience some cleaners can flatten the suede, taken away its loft. Water and a rag ok?

Ya know guys, white, hard as a rock rawhide,  like ya give your dog to chew on ( commonly in the form of bones ,strips, etc) Another thing I might would consider is to die it. Any tips? It seems to have a little shelac on it. Would have to remove that.

I've never had an occasion to need to clean rawhide. Perhaps Lexol would work there, too. You'd want to try it on a scrap first so you didn't ruin it.

Thanks Marshal, Yeah I got this saddle and cleaned it to near perfection and now the rawhide makes the rest look bad. I may just die it. The rawhide is plumb white, so I doubt I'll get those dark stains completely out.
By the way on my suede, I did use just a damp rag. I  had wildew to remove off of it as well. ( Suede topped seat on this ropin' saddle) Worked just fine. It was near 100 degrees outside, so it dried up nicely and didn't flatten the suede out.
