I have a chance to pick up a Colt Police Positive Special in 32/20. Are they NCOWS legal? It is nice and would like to use it for more than plinking if it is legal.

As of now they are neither approved or Unapproved. There has been a request to approve, but the documentation is not in yet, If it does come in, it will be voted up or down in late July. At this time I would NOT recommend you buy it for an NCOWS gun. If it's a great deal and you want it , By all means . But  be advised it may NOT become NCOWS legal.

From Sutherland and Wilson's 'The Book of Colt Firearms' - page 375.

'The Police Positive was Colt's successor to the New Police.
First announced in 1907...'

The above-mentioned reference is considered the 'Colt Bible' - so reading it provides what documentation is necessary as far as dates of actual manufacture, model designations and various serial number ranges are concerned.
