I have a chance to buy a super blackhawk cheap and was wondering if it was a good choice?  I am just getting started and probably won't compete this year much because of my schedule.  I reload for .44 mag already and could load light etc.  I also shoot major class in ipsc so recoil won't bother me much.  But how much slower will It be then say .357?  If I go the .44 route what would be a good rifle that is good out of the box?

Thanks for any advice!

Shawn, Welcome to our fire.

Tthe Super Blackhawk will limit you to the Modern Class but if it is a good deal you can always swap it later.  It wouldn't be my first choise for a CAS gun but my son shot a pair for his first couple of matches.  As for the caliber you can load the 44 mag pretty light so that wouldn't be a problem.

The SBH should work out just fine for you to start with and, as WK mentioned, it will limit you to the "Modern" class, but I don't think that is a bad thing at all. As for comparision with the .357 magnums, I would venture to say that the majority of folks shooting the .357 guns do so with light .38 specials, so their recovery time would be a little bit faster. I shoot a brace of .44 magnum Ruger Vaqueros, but I use .44 special ammo and it works for me. As for the rifle, my personal choice would be a Cimarron model 73 in .44 special, but they are a might expensive.
For a beginner, I would take a hard look at the Marlin in .44 magnum (Big 5 sells them for about $300 bucks) or a Rossi 92 in .44 magnum. Glad to have ya'll join the fire!

I started this game with a 3 screw SBH because I already had the brass, bullets, and reloading dies. I bought a used 1894 Marlin in .44 Mag. There are plenty of used Marlins in .44 Mag for sale. You should be able to find one for under $400. If you are not going to get into Frontier Cartridge or Duelist, the SBH would be a good choice.

I started shootin' SASS matches in 2000 wit' a pair of 10.5" K-Super Blackhawks.
I shot Modern for the first 2 years & had a great time!!!!  I was clean (but slow) on several matches.
Hell, ya cain't miss wit' 10.5" of barrel out there!!!

I then sawed the barrels off to 7.5" & put Bisley Gripframes on 'em.

Sold 'em to a new shooter buddy & now do the GF thang wit' my .44 mag 5.5" K Bisley Vaqueros.

Most of the small local matches don't care about sights.  They are happy to see you.  That's the way I started with and old SBH.  Load 'em down to about 850 Fps.  About 7 gr of Unique is OK.  There's a lot of MArlin and Uberties out there for rifle -- Just look.

I don't use the rear sight for CAS so I don't care what you shoot  :D
