What type of rifle was Mr. Neuman shooting in the movie Hombe. I remember a long time before cas a friend told me it was a 44-40
rifle and pistol. It sure did make more noise than the other guns in the movie but I realize this was hollywood.
All my weapons are currently .357/38  but lately I have been daydreaming about a Big black powder smoke and noise type of shooting irons .I especially like the muzzel flash. and noise.

nope it was hombre, meaning man, paul neuman played a part indian . And said one of the most memorable lines in
westerns to richard boone.  Richard boone walked up a hill with a flag of truce and gave Neuman an ultimatium then sneered like all bad guys
"any questions "
" How you gonna get down that hill  " was Hombres quiet reply .

Home boy ? I  dont speak the language. Too old

I've watched the scenes in the movie with that rifle closely many times. The side plates are clearly visible on the rifle, which would make it either a Winchester Model 1873 or an 1876.

I was chatting about this with somebody over on the SASS Wire one day. He told me he knew the guy that actually owns the rifle today that Paul was using in Hombre.

Best as I can remember, it was a Winchester 1873 in 44-40 with a half length magazine. The boom was probably added in the editing room. Some of the visual effects in that movie were particularly poorly done, I wouldn't be surprised if they got the sound of the rifle wrong too.

Here is what I was told:

Hi DJ,  A pard in Tennessee that I use to shoot with owns that rifle.  He bought it several years ago and brought to one of our matches.  It's a '73 Winchester in 44-40 cal.  The gun was very rough and shot poorly.  This pard was and extra in movies including TOMBSTONE.  He lived in New Mexico at that time.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!
