Uniforms - do you need one?

Recently several people have asked me if they need a uniform, especially if they are an officer in the GAF.

The short answer is NO.  The GAF does not require anyone to acquire or wear a uniform.

The longer answer is that YES, we do encourage our members to wear a uniform, especially whenever they are attending a GAF event or representing the GAF at another event.  Our organization was founded to pursue the serious study of the Victorian-era military, and wearing an appropriate uniform is just one way of better appreciating and understanding the military of the period.

However, the choice of uniform is up to you, as long as it fits within our time period.  You can be whatever service or corps (branch) you want, including that of another country, and with whatever rank you want, regardless of what rank you may hold in the GAF.  We even permit the "John Ford" look for those who want to wear it, though I have noticed that most of us who opt to wear a uniform tend to go for the more historically correct impression.

Officers of the GAF are even more encouraged to wear a uniform since they are far more visible as representatives of the GAF, but they are no more required to wear one than any other member.  I'm pleased to note that our Department Commanders are setting the example of wearing a uniform.

I realize that our female members are at a disadvantage since women did not serve openly in the military during the late 19th century.  However, if you do a bit of research you'll find women who designed and wore their own military-style outfits, and we all know that some women dressed as men to serve in the ranks.

Well, I do have a few bits and pieces (including a couple of Federal CW sack coats, and a Confederate shell jacket and frock coat) that I should probably put up for sale.  I need to weed out what I don't (or can't) wear anymore.

I am looking for a pair of 'yankee' pants for a new impression.

I need a 36 inch waist and the worse shape they are in, the better for my impression.
