My 1873 rifle seems to have difficulty chambering the first round.  I load the standard CAS 10 rounds and my rifle consistantly jams chambering the first round.  After the first shot it performs flawlessly.  I've managed to mitigate the problem somewhat after loading the 10th round by using a dowel to shove the round as far in as possible.  It seems to be getting shoved back into the loading door at an odd angle preventing it from being chambered properly.  Any suggestions?

Waterloo St. Clair,

You may have too much tension on the spring in the tube, you may wish to shorten the spring or see if there is a limiter in the tube and shorten that.

I only shoot to support my reloading habit.

The first round is the last one loaded.  It never gets to be lined up in the magazine so it's rim stay slightly cocked to the right.  Look down from above and you will see the rim off to the loading gate side.

The problem is when the carrier tries to lift it the rim hits the casting in the carrier tunnel and jams.  Uberti does not do a very good job of chamfering the sharpe edges in the channel.  Disassemble the rifle and look at the opening where a bullet is loaded in from the loading gate.  Locate the rear bottom of the bridge of material just above that area and break the edge with a small file.  It is harder to explain than it is to do.

Good luck.

And may the good Lord take a likin' to ya.

Thanks Happy Trails, I'll pull it apart tonight and take a look.
