What would you do...?

I want to make a detachable fur collar (coyote?) for a coat with an existing collar.

How would you go about attaching it so the attachment thingies (buttons, I assume) wont show with the collar on or off?

Forty are you talking the Whole Pelt or just a piece big enough to make a collar?

Just enough for the collar.  Something I could take off in warmer weather without a bunch of button, laces, hooks, etc showing.  I want it to lay over the existing collar when it's down in tyhe normal position,  against my neck when turned up, and I want it to look like it was part of the original design.

I can get the fur, about 4" x 24" and cut it to fit.  Even two pieces half as long so the knap would lay right.

Cutting and stitching the pelt isn't a problem, but fastening it so it looks good is.

El Peludo

I had a leather jacket years ago that had such a setup - the fur had a liner that formed a pocket that slipped over the leather collar of the coat, and fit real close so the collar points stretched it snug, and there were three or four small buttons on the underside of the coat collar, set real close to the crease where the leather collar turned down, that held the fur one on; they were small enough that they didn't show when the fur one was off, and were hardly noticeable if you turned the leather collar up.

Forty,
If you don't think buttons would be uncomfortable, on the back of your neck. You might try cutting the pelt the  shape you desire then cutting a light piece of canvas to  match up with the hide side of pelt. This would be much like the old "woolies" angora chaps would have been done. Then sew maybe a 3/8" button to the  canvas, in anchor points at each end, back/center...3 or 4 might do. Then take hide and sew to canvas. Finally  slot the collar and hem holes so you can attach. Good Luck

Sounds like a plan.

I'll get some paper and see can I make a workable pattern.

Thanks.

I'd just take a whole skin and wrap it around my neck.  ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, an' you wouldn't even kill the coyote, either.  Then you'd have to feed it an' clean up after it.

Remember what Ma said last time, with the cougar?

Forty what ever happen to this?
Mathew 5.9

Got the pattern made and I'm waiting for the next big event at The Cowboys to find the guy who sells furs...I want juuuust the right one.

Okay, picture this: the top (fur) part is a tad bigger than the existing collar so it will over lap it all around.  This is sewed or laced onto the bottom (pigskin to match the coat) part so it's still open where the collar attaches to the body of the coat.  This assembly fits over the collar like an envelope.

I'll make three small eyelets in the top of the body, one in the center and one near each end.  When the coat is worn without the fur they will be hidden by the existing collar.  I'll put a lace loop on the front edge of the fur top part to correspond with the eyelets, and a small button on the bottom leather part of the envelope to accept the loops.  The loops will go through the eyelets onto the buttons.

May have to go with two more loops and buttons to make 5 evenly spaced.

The only way anything will show is if I wear the collar turned up, with or without the fur.

I nee to get a piece of hide wide enough to have the knap of the fur lay back righ or else piece two together for the same effect.

I been working on a way to make detachable fur cuffs to match out of the left over fur, but that's going to be considerably harder to attach invisibly.

Thanks for asking.
