Capt. Hamp Cox

The man in the second quote was a Captain in a Milita unit at one time, although was not a very good one.  He was not a Captain at the time of the quote.  He had a VEEEERRRYYY high rank.  He was also technically commander of the person he said he would obey the orders of. ???

I'd never heard that story, Del, so I needed some help to come up with the answer.  You are right that "He had a VEEEERRRYYY high rank."  How 'bout the President?

My turn! ::)  It's either one of these, no one is sure which.  ???

"No, I won't."
   or
"No I won't."

Might be too easy!

Custer at LBH

Delmonico

Ok, the Captain was Abe Lincoln at Ft. Stevens, a young Colonel of Artillary (name not recorded) was trying ta keep Abe from peekin' over the parapet ta see what the Rbebs were doin'.  Course they were shootin' at him, the Colonel was sure they knew who he was.  He politly said; "Please Mr. President, you are with in the range of 500 rebel rifles.  Please come down to a safer place.  If you do not, it will be my duty to call a file of men, and make you."

That was the words of Custer to General Terry when he left the Yellowstone.  Terry had said, "Custer, don't get greedy, leave some Indians for us."
