WOW!!!!! Major. Awesome! I like the stock on your muzzleloader a lot. Most of all I really like the skirmish picture you sent WOW! You guys look like you are right in the middle of battle, for sure. Even the dirt on your faces and hands. That could be from a movie. Awesome. Thank you for the pics pard.

It's probably birch ,Howdy. Marlin's always used birch on their less expensive guns. I've got a Glenfield .22 auto and the stock is about that same color. Another carbine I had years ago was that color too and I bought it new. Definately birch........Buck 8) :o ::) ;)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

HD,

I am still able to find the Watco Danish Oil at the Home Despot, and I think Lowe's also carries it.  BTW, I am also thinking about doing the same thing to my two Brownings.  That urethane finish looks too much like plastic ::)

Major, wow that was from a movie then. I like the pic you emailed me so much I am keeping it. It looks great in the unshrunken web pic. Too cool.

Buck, yup, I would say it is birch too. Nice machining on it, but really dull looking. I am getting fired up about the tiger striping trick and    Modoc, I will check out the Watco stains when I head over to Lowes. Thanks

You pards are just great and I plan on taking pics as I go along with the different stages of the transformation. It might be really interesting if it turns out nice to someone else with one of the Big 5 Marlins.

I have a 45Colt that my smith slicked up.  Actually I don't recall anyone telling me that my quick Marlin was ugly.
Now that you mention it, I think I will stick it in the back corner of my gun safe(s) and shoot my '73.  It is pretty and Big Five is not even aware they exist!

What did the Marlin run you?  We don't subscribe to the local scandal rag, so miss out on the adds.  I may (stress may) be thinking about a second rifle for Sierra Packer and have been recomended to go with a Marlin over the '92.  Also, are the Big 5 Marlins Ballard or Micro groove and has it made a difference?

Thanks

Howdy Modoc,
The Big 5 Marlins are $319. With tax here 7.25% and the DROS it came to $368. Still alot cheaper than my 1894c I got about 6 years ago at $550+ and my 1894 45lc at about $600 and the 336 cowboy at $650.

BTW,I have poslished all the parts that needed it and did a number on the snail cam and hammer nose. I am waiting right now for the one piece firing pin and springs and I have the forearm stock sanded and am gonna start on the stock sanding next. I am taking pics as I go for the record. Once I get a chance I will make up a file describing the mods and the pics to go with it. Some of the stuff Mohave Gambler has on his website from a couple years ago.

I think Marlins are great for a mediocre shooter like myself.

You pards are great. Thanks for all the tips and encouragement. I am about done with the stock. I sanded  all the old finish off to bare wood. Took a torch to it and it ate away at anything soft around the rings and grain that were hidden. I then had to sand a lot more, because the hard rings were really prominate and it was really rough. I finally got it down smooth. I left some of the burnt markings on it and then stained it all over with the minwax. I rubbed it down with steel wool to tone it down a bit and then started applying coats of formsby tung oil. After each coat was dry, I would hit it with the steel wool and then apply another coat. I have about 10 coats on it. I am about to reassemble it all after doing a lot of work on the innards, but that is another story. Now, I need to actually fire it and need to get it dialed in since I changed both the front and rear sights too.
Again, thank you pards so much for the help. I can live with what I have now. :)

I took it outside and let it get it's first look at some sunshine today. I still need to touch the blue on the lever where I polished too far down. It is done and unfortunately it won't be until next week before I can sight it in. Feels smooth and ready to go.
Thanks pards for all the help and advice. I appreciate it. Here is the final picture of my winter project.

It turned out well, Howdy!! I don't think you will have to worry about picking up the wrong rifle by accident. That one now has STYLE !
