Hardtack recipe that won't be just bricks...

I have had hardtack that was not a square piece of floor tile in the making.

Was there a recipe that more closely resembles what is made by Bents?

I have been told that during the Civil War, there were far more factories than just Bents that made hardtack. Some of them were actually not bad, almost good, others were ...well...like I make it.

Anyone?

Bent's is still in busness and their water crackers are similar to hard tack, but not as hard as your floor tile.

Not much of a "recipe" for hardtack...just bascaillyh flour and water...and yeah it does harden up pretty quickly...Not sure I would use them for floor tiles though...be tough on your feet for one thing, and you've have a major ant problem...them little critters aren't very picky at all...

Most hard tack also uses salt, you just mix a dough and knead it till it is smooth, roll it cut it and bake it ato about 300-350.  Sometimes a tough leavened and shortened cracker is called hard tack, but it ain't.  The hardness is what kept them from breaking up and reduced spoilage. 

By the way, leftover hardtack made for the Civil War was used by the army till at least the late 1890's.
