Howdy Ive been shootin 38 special loads in my new style vaqueros and been using W231 powder and standard small pistol primers. I want to try another powder and was wondering if any benefits can be had by using mag. primers? The powder I'm gonna try is HP38 3.3 grains and 158 grain lrnfp bullet.

dawg,

I load .44's and .45's. I load smokeless and Black Powder. I have found no benefit in using the mag primers for CAS shooting. Mostly used them for BP, some in smokeless, and didn't notice any difference. That's just my opinion, of course.

Unless something has changed since last I checked HP38 and W231 is the same stuff.

Some of the boys shootin' 'round here usin' light charges of Clays have switched over to a hotter primer.  Seems ta be workin'.

I'm kindah funny 'bout smokeless.  Like ta stay with published data from the powder manufacturer.  Use magnum primers only if the load data calls for it.

Especially if you're close to the max in the data......Buck 8) ::) :o
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

I thought HP38 and W231 were the same    But they are from different manufactures now the load data is almost identicle HP 38 has a slightly faster burn rate than W 231. All I'm really after is to make sure all the powder is burnt without any boo-boos.

Thanks all

It's the same stuff. Comes from the same supplier( not made by Hodgdon or Winchester/Olin)..............Buck 8) ::) ;)

Yup.  That's whut I've been told.

Used W231 when I was shootin' pins for SubCaliber 'n Revolver.  Stayed with it when I started this evil game.  Switched to HP38 after 'meetin'' Birdshot.  Wanted to do bidness with Hodgdon.  Tried Clays with mixed results then settled on TiteGroup.  These days I do Goex.  Sorry, Mike.

For indoor range activity I still use TiteGroup for .38 Special and 9mm.  Good stuff.  If it weren't for that I'd be usin' HP38.

Reckon the minor differences in burn rates depends on who is testin' what in what 'n the conditions at the time.

I have used both HP38 & Tite Group, I find that Tite Group burns cleaner than HP 38 in my reloads, perhaps it burns faster? anyhow I perfer it over HP38 although bot are made by Hodgdon. Just a personal preferance, use what pleases your shootin irons.
