I was over at a Luger Forum (one of my other money pits) and was turned on to an old book on Blueing and Browning that us CAS folk might be interested in.

The book is "Firearm Blueing and Browning" by R. H. Angier.

This book was written in 1936 and is still published. It covers preparation, rust blueing, scratching (carding) boiling and fixing. It does not cover modern hot bluing which is why I thought this group might be interested. It details many different formulas for rust blueing - in case someone wants to try to duplicate an early original finish. Otherwise the techniques would be very applicable to using modern rust blueing formulas, and could be done at home.

The writing prose is dated with long multi-phrase sentences which I found to be a delight to read.

I found a copy on Amazon, but I'm sure it is available elsewhere.

While it may be more time consuming, Belgian rust, rust and nitre bluing can be done with a very simple set up that the average hobbyist gunsmith can do at home.  Modern hot blue requires too much equipment and doesn't duplicate the look of the old time finishes.  I am going to try to get a copy, thanks!
