Paper Cartridge Question

I'm interested in making paper cartridges fir my cap and ball revolvers and have found the formers to do it, but I'm trying to make them in a historically correct way (also they may find use during muzzle loader season (I assume cap and balls would be allowed?) and Michigan's restricted zone during regular firearms season, so something durable enough to carry and use in the field, just like back then, would be nice.

In my research I found that historical paper cartridges generally nitrated paper, and were glued together with water glass, then the bullet dipped in paraffin wax for lubrication, but what about water proofing?  I have seen period labels making the waterproof claim, but how was that done?

What about painting the entire cartridge envelope with water glass after the cartridge is formed and lubed?  What about painting them with nitrocellulose glue?

Coating with water glass or similar will interfere with the nitrated paper being able to consume itself, I would think.The powder charge will likely go off with the force of the cap burning through the end of the paper cartridge, but a lot more unburned paper left in the cylinder gumming up the works after a couple of discharges. The glue stick I used to assemble was the Uhu stick glue, found in art supply stores or Amazon.. 
When I made paper cartridges I kept them in safety match boxes, five to a box, and affixed a period paper label to the box for effect.I sprayed the sleeve and the sliding drawer insert with clear finish for some waterproofing, but not enough to withstand rain.
If weather was going to be damp I just did not shoot cap 'n' ball. That's when I used the conversion cylinder for fixed cartridges.
I shot .36cal.and I nitrated my own papers using stump remover plus a round ball. I used APP as it did not require any lube and closely approximated black powder. If using black will have to lube.

Nice thing is they also sell replacement pre-cut nitrated paper for rolling your own. If you don't want the fuss of making your own. I put the papers I bought from them through an additional bath of Stump Remover nitrate solution for more positive ignition.

Big plus to Guns of the Old West.   He is great to do business with and he also has great (not period) cappers!    Watch his youtube channel.   I have the paper cartridge former.   I use round ball and dip the end in mix of olive oil and beeswax.   All you need to go.   There are a few other threads about them, but I really recommend the Guns of the Old West youtube channel and merchandise.
