So I have an M1867 Spencer Infantry Rifle. It is still rimfire and I am going to convert it to centerfire but what is a good bullet to use ? I couldnt find brass but I bought some Spencer Brass off of a friend that was loaded for his modern repro. Its got smokeless powder so I have to pull out the bullets and change out the powder. My Spencer has the lane extractor so I can use the newer cartridges instead of the ones cut from .50-70 brass. Also what is a good way to pull the bullets ? I dont have a bullet puller and I dont see any with collets big enough to pull .512 diameter bullers. I have the reloading dies (RCBS) and I have a single stage Lee Classic Press. I was thinking about putting a vise grip on the bullet and then pull down on the press to draw the bullet out of the brass. I know I will most likely damage the bullets on the way out so I figure will need to buy new .512 diameter bullets. I however dont want to damage the rim of the brass or the mouth though. Anyone got any thoughts on this ? Once I get the bullets out I want to reload with FFG Goex. How many grains of powder is good for a 350gr .512 diameter bullet ? I assume I will need some overpowder cards too like I use in my .577 Snider and .45-70 BP cartridges.Thank you to all who reply.

Hello, and welcome:

Couple things, please:

One self-authenticating action to qualify yourself is posting clear, close-up photo's of your Spencer. If you are technically unable, like me, please seek our Moderator's guidance.

For your M1867 Spencer, you should use .512 diameter bullets. These are suitable for the barrel and will work well with your reloading setup. You can find these bullets from suppliers like Hornady or Moyer's Cast Bullets.

Howdy!
I have a 1868 infantry rifle that extracts starline spencer brass wonderfully.  My barrel sluggs at .518 so I use a milled down 50-70 lee mold that ends up throwing a 350ish grain slug.  I have been mia from this group but have dusted off my spencer for deer season.  I primarily use 3f Goex with no powder card and it groups fine.  (i want to say the starline brass handles 38gr by weight but I am working from memory).

I've been away for a while too. El Supremo reminded me to check in. If you can cast your own bullets, try Accurate Molds 52-345A or 52-350S. They will adjust the size to order and their products are first rate. My '67 rifle wanted 0.518" bullets. If you slug your bore, be aware that Spencer groove depth tapers about 0.003" from breech to muzzle, so your slug will be undersize unless you start it at the breech end of the barrel and only push it up the bore a couple inches. That's a pain! A chamber cast might be easier to do. Mine shoots best with 32-35 gr. of Swiss 1.5F or GOEX 2F. Midway sells an inexpensive inertial bullet puller,

The cases for Italian repros fit in it with no problem. You have to leave out the collet for 50-70 based cases, but it does work.
