It is with great sadness that I share the news of the recent passing of SCOWS Deputy Marshal Richard Boyd aka MoonShine, on January 28, 2024. Moonshine was a true cowboy, a good friend, and a valued member of our posse, the South Carolina Old West Shootists, always ready to lend a hand in any way he could.  That spirit helped in sustaining the well-being and growth of SCOWS, and although he will be dearly missed, his contributions will be just as dearly remembered.

MoonShine, as we all knew him, was a Life Member of NCOWS and an NCOWS Senator.  He spent a lot of time at our range, honing his shooting skills and helping along new shooters.  MoonShine participated in all of our matches and events, including the NCOWS Conventions and National Match, often traveling long distances to do so.  MoonShine handled all of the setups for our posse matches, he brought the cooler with ice and the cold drinks we all enjoyed, and was generally the first to volunteer when help was needed.  MoonShine leaves a void that will be hard to fill.

As a token of our respect for Moonshine, the posse is planning to send our condolences to his widow, Wilma, in the very near future. If any of you would like to share a personal sentiment to Wilma, please send an e-mail to our Posse Secretary, Youghiogheny Kid (aka Y-Kid / Kevin Krist) at kevin_krist@yahoo.com within the next few days, and we will be sure to include it in the card.

SCOWS is also planning to include a tribute to Moonshine as part of our annual Michael "Capt.JEB Forrest" Fischer Memorial Match on the last Saturday in June, to which Wilma and Moonshine's family will be invited.

As we bid farewell to Moonshine as he rides off into the sunset, I share the following quote, whose exact origin may be lost, but whose essence remains true: "In heaven, there will always be a place for cowboys, riding through the clouds, forever young."
