Anybody ever use leather dye to stain pistol grips?

Major 2

Yes Sir, Grips, rifle stocks, knife scales, driftwood art, even picture frames,  :)

All the time and for all sorts of things from grips to knife and tomahawk handles. Even this cherry rifle stock:

Most wood will take leather dye nicely. Hardwoods don't take it as readily but it still does color the wood. I've used it myself several times.

If you just want to darken the wood, vinegaroon can really help. This round knife was darkened with vinegaqroon:

Howdy Craig and Coffinator,

First that is a gorgeous firearm (can't tell if it's a rifle or smooth bore).

Coffin: the example is a firearm that was used many years ago when I was just starting to shoot. We used to wander around in river bottoms looking for the kind of rocks that would make sparks when they struck iron. That was also how we started our fires in the sod house.

I took that pic from the NMLRA rifle building course at Bowling Green. It's a Kibler Colonial kit in .54 caliber. Turned out real nice in the end, even if I did put it together.

That rifle is beautiful. The bag looks mighty nice, too.

That would look good. Black leather dye doesn't always make a pure black on some hardwoods. If that's the case for you, you might want to follow the black dye with vinegaroon.

Never tried vinegaroon on wood. Does it give a really black color?

Not necessarily. Look at the two photos I posted of my round knife. Some woods take it better than others. I guess you could always soak the wood in strong brewed black tea to get it full of tannens first to get a much better result. I think it's better to supplement leather dye for a richer black.

Ive used leather dye to match patches in a used 1903 stock and a krag stock plug prior to a refinish.
