main match? side match ?

I have not had time to go to a match to shoot yet. My wife and I observed for several hours about a year ago . I am sure this has been asked before but please tolerate the ?.n.g.
Why are there main match and side match firearms ? If I have a favorite pistol and riflewouldnt I use it in both types matches ? Thankyou Sweettooth
I have a : Ruger vaquero old model , Navy arms gunfighter edition, Brass backstrap uberti ,
1851 Navy , Marlin C.B.C ,  and will order a coyote cap lever action shot gun next week .

Sweettooth,

I am no expert but I do beleive it has alot to do with safety.  And some guns aint authentic for the time period CAS represents.

Side match guns are the ones that are in calibers that aren't legal for main match use, IE: rifle calibers. Examples, 38-55, 30-30, 45-70, 50-70, .22's, etc., you get the picture. Most of these are too powerful for close up targets anyway.
Some side matches are for main match type guns, such as speed pistol, speed rifle( in pistol calibers) ,speed shotgun, and some long range for the pistol caliber guns and revolvers.

Main match in CAS is the x number of stages (shooting scenarios) you shoot with your SA revolvers, pistol caliber rifle and shotgun.

In a CAS match and especially at annual events you will be able to participate in side matches like long range rifle, speed revolver, speed shotgun, derringer or pocket pistol, etc.
