Gentlemen, Would an Armi Sport Spencer hammer work on an original?  I friend of mine just picked up a carbine and the spur was broken and badly welded.  Replacements seem to be a bit difficult to find.

Has your friend done a specific Internet search for a "Spencer Carbine Parts"?  eBay?  I'm sure others will add their thoughts on where to look.

Already looked all those places.  One will show up eventually, but was wondering if an Armi Sport would work for now.

What's wrong with the S&S Spencer Hammer?

The cast parts are often a bit soft from what I've seen.  I guess a man could use Kasenit on it, though.  Will keep it in mind.

I had purchased a Spencer mountain rifle with the hammer nose so battered from dry firing it would not shoot reliably. I bought an S&S replacement hammer so as not to bugger up the original anymore. Yes, the replacement hammer is soft. That is a good thing, as I was able to tweek it to hit the firing pin perfectly. I took it to a local gunsmith and he hardened it for a nominal charge. I aged it to match the gun. It has worked out great.  Jw

That may be the best option.  Thanks, gentlemen!

Maybe Ed Knisely?  He is/was in York, PA.  The phone number I found is 717-741-2556.  But it's a few years old so ??

The Kniselys have lots and lots of antique parts at the Baltimore Show every March, so might be worth the cost of a call.
