Saw an interesting Schofiled at a gunshow this weekend

I saw an interesting S&W Old Russian, or model 2, at a gun show over the weekend.

It had either an unbuffed nickel or bare metal finish with ivory grips. What made it interesting was a shoulder stock, that looked to be made by S&W as well, and a buckhorn sight added to the barrel. My buddy and I were trying to determine if the shoulder stock was original. It had the same serial number as the pistol and had the S&W logo on the cap, but looked much newer than the pistol. The guy wanted $2600.00 for the whole thing.

Anybody have any ideas if S&W ever sold stocks with Old Russians?

Thanks,

They did - and they're expensive.

Really expensive...

If the gun's been originally cut at the factory for the stock - and all is matching - the correct gun and stock together will bring quadruple what the gun alone will bring.

The buckhorn sight makes me wonder if it's not the Model 320 Revolving Rifle.

Hope you got his card...

The 320 was a .320 caliber as well as a model number if I remember right.

Well the stock looks like that except the hardware is nickel plated and the wood looks new as does the cap on the butt.  The pistol itself looks more like an earlier model without the hump  above the handgrips.  The serial number is 2818 and the one on the stock matches the one on the pistol.  It is almost one of those "too good to be true" sort of things.  I looked at some stocks at the high end aution houses that looked exactly like it.  I think I need a better look at it.  I don't recall any writing on the top of the barrel which should be there unless someone ground it off, right?  I will call the guy tonight and see if I can take another look and maybe some pictures.  The wierd part, if it is a good find, is that it has been making the gun show circuit up here for at least the last six months, but Fairbanks is a somewhat limited market for real antique guns; if you can't shoot a bear or a moose with it, what good is it.

Have you guys heard of any fakes that look like this?

Thanks guys,  I will let you know more when I find out more.

There are some - thanks to the rarity of the original.

In my experience - no matter how small the show is - if it's a 'good' piece - it'll generally sell quickly - often never even seeing the table cover as it's being unpacked.

Most gun guys are internet-savvy and a lot of laptops make their way to the shows...

The fact that it hasn't been snapped up 'says' something...

Good Luck.

The Schofield was about the only general model of S&W Model 3 large frame top-break revolvers that was NOT offered with an optional shoulder stock.  Any of the stocked Model 3's is fairly rare & desireable.  Top to bottom:
Stocked American
Stocked Russian
Stocked New Model #3
Revolving rifle

The stocked American & stocked Russian are VERY rare, and an original one in almost any condition should be a bargain at the price mentioned.  However, reproduction stocks were made, and for one w/ a repro, the price might be about full retail.

The New Mod. #3 w/ stock is probably the least rare.  The price mentioned might be retail if average, or high if the gun is refinished or no finish.

A revolving rifle (note the forend on the barrel, and the longer than standard barrel) should be a fairly good buy at that price, unless the gun is in horrid condition & the stock is repro.  Could be a really bargain if it's a nice gun.  It's the one that has the factory buckhorn flip-up sight on the barrel, as mentioned in a previous post.

If you buy it & want to make a quick profit, I'd be glad to take a look at it & see what I could offer.  If you decide to pass on it, I'd like a chance to buy it, if you're comfortable passing on the seller's contact info.

Hope that helps. -- Jim
