Chaps

Now a days there are a lot of styles and I'm pretty certain some arrived after the golden era of the old West.  I am pretty certain shotguns, woolies, and bat wings all date to the 1880's but I'm not sure.  Off hand, batwings would seem the easiest to put on but for those here who wear chaps- what do you like?  I'm thinking about my first pair.  What about summer time when the weather is warmer?

Howdy Davem,

It is my understanding that batwing chaps are a later design. I'm not sure of the exact timing but I think after 1900. Don't know about woolies, but they probably came in after many cattle operations moved north. Again no actual timing. I guess I'll have to delve into my research library.

Per Peter Sherayko's "Fringe of Hollywood" (in which he urges filmmakers to "get it right"), batwings started in the 1880's and woolies in the 1890's.

I like the half chaps/botas.    They are cooler and light weight and you can bling the heck out of them.

Howdy again,

A quick review of my library shows conflicting dates for Batwings. Mann shows 1900 date while "I See By Your Outfit" shows 1880 for both Batwings and Woolies. So, to be diplomatic, I'd say between 1880's and 1900.

Depends on area Wyoming Montana , SD would wear woolies in winter ,  Batwings in warmer months , and chinks in southwest alot of Shotgun in say Texas  . Being a pro Bull Rider mostly Batwings But personal preference
