Vinyl longgun sheaths?

Okay, this would not be for long term storage, just simple sleeves to slip over my long guns when shooting if the weather is wet. Would a heavy vinyl make a decent cover or are there some drawbacks to this idea?

Would these be used in a cart for CAS or a rack at a range where the muzzle is pointed up as opposed to a horizontal rack like in a vehicle, then?

I'd think some heavy synthetic tarp material would work good.

I had a weighted lightweight waterproof material that I would drape over my entire cart, [it held them muzzle up]. That and a bungee cord kept everything dryish. Bought lightweight canvas sleeves from a vendor there to go over my long guns when I shot EOT. A very dusty shoot.

It would be for vertical storage while in the cart at matches. I use heavy magnets to keep them in place, so the sleeves would not be thick enough to interfere famous last words].

sounds like you have the long term storage thing figured but just in case
about the most effective way to ruin (rust) the finish on a good gun is keep it in a vinyl bag for any length of time (only seems to take a few days for surface rust)

We be talking Nauga Hyde here???  Really??  Nauga's are an endangered nearly extinct specie.  Almost as hard to find and keep as an alert.  Always see signs to "Keep Alert".  First, how does one catch an alert.  Then, what do you feed it??

The only reel Vinyl I have experience with is what they use to make LP platters out of.  That ain't reel flexible.  Anybody ever tried to skin a Nauga anyway??

I agree with Greyhawk, vinyl gun cases means rust! I won't have them in my home and advise anyone that has them to throw them away. Too many times I've had people bring me guns totally covered in rust that were in them.
Now it's time for me to go look for the lost Indian princess Falling Rock, there's signs all over these mountains to watch for Falling Rock so she must still be lost!

   Nope, not for long term storage, they would just be used when the guns are actually in my guncart at the range. My guns don't get babied, but I do care for them right!

Even for short term storage, any kind of Plastique is bad JuJu.  Foggy Day??  Drizzly Day??  Rainy Day??  Any of the foregoing and Vinyl will trap moisture and cause flash rusting.

Let us understand, I are a card carrying WIMP and do not shoot in the rain.  Nope.  No Way.  First sign of rain and I'm gone.  However, were I contemplating finding myself in in-climate weather conditions, or extreme dust, I would avail myself of a leather crafter and pony up for some swell, flexible, thin LEATHER thingies to cover my long guns.

As an aside, those Wool, Faux Wool lined Gun Cases are also Verboten around my patch.  Especially since those cheap things are mostly made of Alert Hydes.

I think most of us are wimps when it comes to being out in the rain. I don't like getting wet, and I sure don't want my guns to get wet, but yet if you go all the way back to the civil war days, and the days of the wild, wild west, those guys apparently were a lot tougher. If it rained or snowed, they were still out in it, and their guns were out in it also. Hopefully, a little maintenance on a regular basis was done, but I have often wondered just how often a rifle was thoroughly cleaned and oiled?

I just use a regular leather scabbard, it keeps water out of the barrel and if it's raining so hard it's saturated then it's a swamp of a day and everything is going to be wet anyway when you go to shoot. I clean my guns with water anyway.
