Bought one of these on line about a month ago.  Showed up yesterday.  Set it up after work, and in around a half hour annealed over 200 Krag cases, and 100 Starline .45-70.  Quality unit, well though out, easy to use, good price.  I like it, and makes preserving some of my oddball brass far easier.  I ran the torch off a 20lb camper bottle.  Plenty of hose in the machine to let me set the bottle on the floor with the unit on my loading bench.

I must admit to having been very tempted by this little unit.  Very Tempted indeed.  The las time I sat down with my really frugal (CHEAP) set-up, it was a couple of hours of sheer boredom.  Also made my back hurt (old guy).  Work has always fascinated me.  Could sit and watch it all day.  I could sit and watch the little machine anneal for me all day too!!  Hummmmmmmm

I went back out there later in the evening and loaded up every piece of Krag and 45-70 brass I had left and ran them thru.  The dang thing is mesmerizing!

Have something metallic close by to dump the catch tray in.  It fills up fast!

Will it do 45 schofield and 38 spec? The short brass?

Drydock

No, I'm not sure what flame annealer could.  Probably go induction for that.  I've never bothered with pistol brass myself.

Did some measurements.  Pretty sure I could do .45 Colt cases and similar, but not much shorter.  Maybe they could make some skinny wheels for that.

:)  Oh Darn   ;)

I just hate it when I save a bundle of money.  Thank You Marshal Dillon, for asking the KEY question.  If the dandy little machine won't do 45 Schofield, Cowboy 45 Special and 38 special, it would be useless to me.  Oh Schuckey Darns.

Looks like I stick with my El Cheapo set up, which actually cost me nothing, as I had all the components for years and years.  Well amortized so to speak.

Spring time is Annealing Time in my garage.  Groan.

Yeah, these kind of machines are really meant for rifle brass.

I've worked out a system utilizing an electric screw driver. I can do both rifle and pistol brass by simply putting a spacer in the cup to raise the height of the pistol brass.

That and a soft flame propane torch and you're good to go.

Did all my .50-70 and 43 Spanish brass today.  Thing has worked itself out of a job for now.  Now I need to load all this stuff.  I also tried some Starline .45 Colts, and it worked well.  If he had some 1/4" thick wheels you could probably do a lot of pistol brass.

Could a set of wheels be cut down?

Drydock

See no reason why not.  The wheels are some sort of high density plastic, (Derlin?) and I'd think a band saw would make an easy cut.

Some sort of fire retardant material around the wheel, or just traction material?

Drydock

The lower wheel has a tractive band around it, the upper is plain.   With shorter cases you try to angle the flame just a bit away from the wheels, but I've had no problems with heat damage.  Some have, but always admit to having  not paid attention to how the flame had been aimed.   You pretty much have to have direct flame contact to cause damage.  The wheels are heat resistant, but will char if in flame contact.

Hi Chuck
Slightly off topic, but how often do you anneal the Krag brass?   My plan is to load 5 and anneal on the Schofield brass.

I have one and bought the different size wheels.  The thin wheel is close if not a hear to thick for .38.   I do .44-40, .45 Colt, and .44 mag on it.  I am thinking about having a friend chuck up a round bar and turn two thiner wheels and mill the notch.  If you have to pay a machine shop it would cost more than it is worth.  I was having Star Line .45-70 brass only last 3-5 times before it would develope splits.  Using the Annealeez I am up to 15 times per case and counting and not lost one.
