Had a guy locally contact me and wanted me to make him a belt and pair of holsters. He is a new shooter just getting into cowboy action shooting but had a few specifics that he wanted.

He wanted a tapered belt rather than the billets.
He wanted a dark brown
He wanted a single loop holster pattern
He wanted 12 bullet loops for 38spl
He wanted a silver buckle
He wanted a simple border stamp
He wanted the bottom of the holster open

He liked the Dodge City Holster rig that I recently made so he settled on that style but with the open bottom

He was very pleased which makes me pleased.

Beautiful rig Rube. That should serve him very well.

Thanks. I hope that it does just that.

This was the first tapered (Style?) belt that I made or even tried on and I must say that I found it to be very comfortable and may build myself one soon.

There's nothing like starting out with a fine rig like that. Good job.

Beautiful work. It's great for a customer to have a place to go where they can get a quality job exactly to their wants and specifications.
You need to learn to like all the little everday things like a sip of good whiskey, a soft bed, a glass of buttermilk,  and a feisty old gentleman like myself

Thank you. I have only been at this almost a year (next month) and there are some really great leather guys out there but I have been learning and soaking up what I can. I am glad I found leather work because it is something I truly have been enjoying. I am happy and humbled that someone would think enough of what I am doing to have me make them a rig.

I have trouble on dying leather. Could you often a few tips. Thanks.  That it.....prior to dying- wash the leather? Use neat's-foot oil before or after, etc.

When I dye with solvent based dye like Fiebings or Lincoln, I put alcohol in a spray bottle and thoroughly spray the leather with it before dying so the dye spreads evenly into the leather. If I want a lighter color than the dye would produce, I thin it with alcohol first.

When fully dry, I follow that with a thin application of Skidmore's leather cream or Lexol leather conditioner. Of those two, I prefer Skidmore's.

Excellent tip.
Lately, I have been dip dying because I found it to be easier and it gives a more even look. Since I have been doing leather work though I have tried several different kinds of dye and leather combos as well as several different techniques.

The advantage to doing it this way is you can get the leather quite wet with the dye so it's an even coat and still not get it too dark.
