Hard to find Mould for 1876

Just a friendly fyi. There is a Lyman Cast Bullet Mould #457192 currently listed on eBay. I searched for three years to find mine. It's a 350gr. flat nose that is the best mould for the 45-75 1876 Winchester. I have no affiliation what so ever with the seller, I just wanted you guys here to know one is available. I spent about $135.00 for mine and the bidding was fierce. You won't get this one at a bargain price but they are a scarce and desirable mould for the 1876.

I think that mould is the 330gr. The one in the photograph is mine. I believe it's the Gould express bullet. I have the modern one with the hollow point but it's kind of a pain to use. It requires the extra steps of putting the awl in and removing it. I'm sure that a hollow point has no value in a cast bullet of that size and weight, it's not going to open up and using the awl messes with my cadence.

Original Winchester 45-75 molds come up on Ebay every so often. I paid $50 or so for mine and got a really nice one. The Lyman Gould mold works ok, I made up a filler plug pin to eliminate the Hollow point.

Why would someone get in a real bidding war for one? That same design is in accurate catalog and you can have new ones made all day long. In fact I just ordered a two cavity one recently and had one of the cavities made for that design and the other for a different design. Pour two different type bullets at the same time.

No bidding war, place a bid amount for what you think is appropriate for you, and leave it. You are not forced to keep bidding. Deals in life are where you find them. I like original Winchester molds and mine compliments my 2nd model.
I will have to weigh the Lyman and post it.

Trust me when you look at the bid history people are going back and raising their bid prices its always the case. To each his own but it's just an old Lyman mold to me and has no real collector value, just a tool. In many cases older tools are better than can be bought today but in this case I can buy a brand new one just as good or better quality for a lot less than that one will wind up bringing. I'm sure many people assume that a quality new one of that design can't be bought today or else I doubt that would be going for that price but then again there could be two die hard Lyman mould collectors and it only takes two bidders in an auction to run up a price.

I found one of these Lyman molds at the Denver antique arms show about 15 years ago, paid $75 for it. I have never actually used it. I have used my old standby Winchester .45-75 mold which to me is identical to the Lyman one. In normal times we would be able to buy sized and lubed bullets from Buffalo Arms but they are out of stock now.

The Winchester molds and loading tools are available on eBay although it may take a little time to find the ones you want.

You can also shorten a 457193 in a lathe or mill. The 193 is the 405 grain (nominal, more like 430) Marlin 1881 mold.
