We're all aware that many millions of American buffalo or bison were slaughtered for their hides.  In  some instances their tongues were also taken because of the demand for them back East.  In most instances the rest of the meat was left for the buzzards, 'yotes, and wolves, or to rot.  Ever wonder what happened to all those tons and tons of buffalo bones, horns and hooves that remained?  Well, believe it or not, there was a market for them as well.  I found this on-line reprint of an early book on the subject, and thought it was worth sharing.

I saw a reference to this in a movie this week.  With all the Westerns I've been watching since my forced idle time I can't place the movie, but the character says something to the effect:  "I'm a bone collector.  Buffalo bones, that is.  We sell them for use in fertilizer!"

Would have made a good movie quote question if I could remember the movie and character.

No way do I belive that the resident repository for all things associated with western movies can't remember the name of a movie.  Bet you're just trying to make us think you really are a human and not a computer, but we know better.

If you look at this picture from that article it looks like a big boss Elk rack front and center.  Musta been quite a time back then!

Adios,

The really good quality bones were made into charcoal to use in sugar refining.  They were also used to make into bone china.  These were shipped to England, your antique Wedgewood set may have buffalo bones in it.

It might have been in there, but I haven't watched that one in a coons age.  This one seems to have hit me within the last week.  I want to say the remake of Stagecoach with Bing Crosby and Ann Margret, but there isn't a character in Stagecoach I can make come up with that line.  It might have been a dream, having fallen asleep with the Westerns channel on all night.

Howdy Russ T Chambers,

Watched "White Buffalo" last night and that line was not in there. I too know I have heard or read it and it is starting to bother me. Of course it gives me an excuse to watch some westerns. Are you sure it was something you heard in a movie? I want to say I read it.

Darn sure I didn't read it.  I have been known to fall asleep with the dish programmed to take me to whatever channel has a Wetern on it.  Last week had Westerns all over the range of channels I get.  I'm thinking it occured in a stage coach as part of the conversation amoung the passengers, but won't swear to it.

Howdy Russ T Chambers,

The only version of "Stagecoach" I have seen is the orginal and I am pretty sure it wasn't in there. Going to have to see if my mom has last weeks TV guide. See what westerns were on.

There have been two remakes.  The original with the Duke, the one with Alex Cord as Ringo (the one with Ann Margret and Bing Crosby), then Kris Kristofferson as Ringo, and Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson.  This last was not one of the best IMO!

Well, it came to me in a dream last night, but think the "Bone collector" reference is from "Gun Fury" with Donna Reed and Rock Hudson.  It's one of the passengers on the stage before Reed is kidnapped.  It was on AMC last Saturday morning, but isn't scheduled to be re-shown at this time (never fails usually they repeat five to ten times).  I don't have a copy to verify it, so if someone out there can check it out so Ruff Justice and I can sleep better, I'd appreciate it.

AMC finally brought it back out of the archives last night.  It was from the first five minutes of "Gun Fury", just like my dream told me.  Now I can get on with other dreams, like maybe shooting a clean match. ::)
