Just so happens that a 50 cal. 50 grain eq pyrodex pellet will just fit in a 56-50 under a Rapine bullet.  Further data when the range and I thaw out a little.

let me caution you on using such a heavy load in a spencer. i certainly wouldn't advise it in an orginal. the load calls for 30 gr. of black powder. i have used a pyrodex 30 gr. pellet with a bees wax wad between the pellet and the bullet. fits well and cycles well. good luck, geo.

The most I have put under the Lee bullet is 45gr of Pyrodex P or GOEX FFFg.

Those "pellets" must be really compressed to be that heavy.

The cartridges will hold upto that and theTaylors spencer should be "ok".

I would be careful, though...

Tried 1 cartridge loaded of 777 pellet over the chronograph:

50/50 pellet of 777, Rapine 350gr 520" bullet( set to top of pellet OK in my case length) = 1356 fps.

WWLR primer beginning to show flat area from bolt surface/face.

WOW!!!

Now that's a load!  That would really thump a black Russian boar or deer under 100 yards! That would even be a viable load for long range levergun side matches.  I'm gonna have to get me some of the Triple 7 pellets.  I was planning on loading 45 grains of 777 under the LEE modified when I get the mold.  That should go 1250ish, but the 50 grain pellet is awesome!

Now what's that formula for ME?

Good GRIEF!!!

What was the recoil like? 1350fps on a 350gr bullet, that had to have some kick back...

Did the pellet fill the case internallly from side to side as well?

If there was any space left, I would be surpirsed. Those pelles are designed for muzzleloaders.

I would call these huntin loads for sure...how was the accuracy? (groups)

Me? I like to keep my loads tamed down a bit...

Thanks for sharing, though.

Harve Curry

I only shot the one round, so no groups to measure.

Recoil didn't seem any different then my 1100fps load. But Spencer's are heavy at what, about 9lbs?

The case comes out very easy, same as my other loads.

Yes there is space on the side of the pellet. It does'nt  move though since the bullet is pressed onto it.

I wouldn't shoot anymore till I have some info of what the pressure is, either in PSI or CUP.

Harve: Interesting load. Might even do for shaggies up close. Recoil ought to be less than the M1873 405-grain .45-70 load,

A simple way to aproximate energy in foot pounds is to take the bullet weight in grains, times velocity in fps squared, times .00000222.
So the 350 grain load at 1356fps would have a energy of 1428.69 foot pounds, a 44 magnum load in a revolver would typically generate 800-1200 foot pounds.

I fired a 45-110 with a 500gr bullet and it hurt...real bad...
500*1350*1350/450450=2022ft-lbs.

I fired a 458WIN Mag with a 405gr bullet and it hurt...even worse...
405*2100*2100/450450=3895ft-lbs.

For deer hunting, my 38-55 with a 255gr JSP is about as much as I can take...
255*1800*1800/450450=1834ft-lbs.

My Win94 38-55 weighs in at ~10 lbs. with 5 rds of ammo in the tube.

I am a wuss...and proud of it. ;)

Dakota: Would you like to try some 220-grain .379 soft points in your .38-55? I can send a few if you like. PM me.
