Horizontal line in frame

New here and to cap and ball! Is that line in the frame to assist in capping with a capper?

Does anyone know if that was done afterward or were some guns manufactured like that?

That was an upgrade by Colt in the "New Model" (round barrel) series.  It should be found on all Colt designs and older model production after 1860.  Helps in alignment and provided additional clearance for a capper.  The Italians can be inconsistent in it's application

And someone has been beating on an ill fitted wedge with some kind of hammer or other steel object.
