Hi y'all, I'm looking for either a pattern or advice how to make my own butt cover.  I made one but I didn't care for the design of it, I couldn't figure out how to make the piece that goes over the recoil pad without getting it to bunch up.

thanks

Marshal Will Wingam

I sew the butt section inside out. Then I put a piece of hard foam cut from one of those kneeling pads inside to fill it out. It gets laced up with a leather thong in a harringbone pattern like you would do a pair of shoes. These never shift or need any attention once they're put on. I like to use suede on the butt cap so they stay put on your shoulder.

These are on rifles but the design is the same I use on all long guns.

That's a good looking Butt Cover Marshall. Thanks for sharing it with us.
You need to learn to like all the little everday things like a sip of good whiskey, a soft bed, a glass of buttermilk,  and a feisty old gentleman like myself

Thanks, Johnny. One advantage to a cover that long is that the stock won't ever get nicked by the hammer on your pistol while moving or transitioning. You can also cover up some nasty things on a goobered stock. That top rifle is a good example of that.

Hi

O.K., I get why the stock cover is good, but why is the wood that way?  Is almost looks like to pieces of wood.  I'm also guessing that's not a mistake because you can usually fix finishing mistakes.

It is two pieces of wood. The rifle had a crescent buttplate on it with points to jam into my shoulder at match speeds. With the help of a friend who makes custom furniture, we cut the stock off and glued a new piece on with a biscuit joint. I then fitted the steel 'shotgun' buttplate to it.

Winchester offered this in the 1800's on a Short Rifle so it's fine for NCOWS, too. Of course, the nearest NCOWS chapter it over 1000 miles away for me. ;D

Nice work Will, cutting any gun butt to 90 degrees center line of bore will redues recoil emencely...

I didn't do it for that, TW, but you're right, of course. It's kind of like corking a baseball bat. ;D

Thanks for sharing and showing pictures.  I've never done a herringbone pattern, looks like I may have to learn something new  ;D

It's pretty simple. Just pretend you're lacing a pair of shoes or boots. :D

I have been trying to post a picture of a butt cover but have had no luck. The file is just 248 Kb with a JPG file extension.  Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

Looks like I knew what I was doing after all. When I tried to review the post the picture was not visible.

To make the butt cover make a pattern out of some heavy paper stock. Put the paper on the stock and cut it to fit. Allow about 1/4"-3/8" sewing allowance and sew with the wrong sides together. Turn right side out and you are finished.

Good Luck, Lucky

Looks good, Lucky. How do you close it onto the stock? Stitched? Laced? Other?

Marshal, I have attached a picture of my rifle that better shows how the cover is fastened to the stock. I use either artificial sinew or leather lacing.
